Sandbox

Options
Just downloaded and started using sandboxie, a free sandbox app, just wondering if anyone else uses this or something similar and their thoughts on how usefull and effective they are. For those who don't know what a sandbox is

Ive given it a quick go. Its supposed to be VERY effective. Probably as safe as you can get for a windows based machine.
Let me know how you get on :)

  • Will do, using sandboxed firefox, no impact on speed, the plus side being hopefully that nothing can be installed without my consent.
  • A virtual PC is a new install of the OS and all the patches, etc. + licence - sandboxie does what it says on the tin and only 450Kb

Been using it for ages and have recommended it several times on the security forum. A cracking piece of software and very helpful author. Probably the only security software you'll ever need (provided you clear the sandbox periodically)
Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????
  • thanks aiadi, any tips, do you have your email client (outlook or similar) sandboxed, so far i've just sandboxed my browser but was thinking about doing the same to outlook express, do you think it's worthwhile

No probs. I have actually forced Sandboxed (automatic sandbox on program launch for which you need to register the software) all the browsers on my PC, all torrent clients and messenger software (MSN) as well as WMPlayer (as it tends to connect to internet at times) and outlook. I usually use web-based email and haven't fiddled a lot with email clients but you can instead of sandboxing a whole program, only force sandbox the folder where your emails are stored and from which you can recover your (safe emails) into the 'real folder'. Lots of info on the software forum: http://sandboxie.com/phpbb/

So far I've sandboxed firefox automatically however Messenger is a good point. Same with torrents. Let's say you download a zip file, am I correct in thinking it'd then open winzip in a sandbox and the contents in theory wouldn't touch your PC until you'd recovered the files out of the sandbox?

That's quite a barrier for all types of nasties.
