Hi all,
I'm hoping that someone out there can help me.
I drive a Citroen C5 2.0 HDi (Diesel) SX Estate.
Now the manual says that I need to top up with 10W40 oil.
the question is can i use ANY 10W40 oil or does it have to be Diesel specific 10W40?
I checked the print out from the garage but it doesn't say if the oil was synthetic, semi-synthetic or mineral...just "CCIT0480 oil" whatever that might be.
I had a reply from Crabman  which included a quote from Car Bible:
"Diesel engines run much higher compression ratios than petrol engines and they run a lot hotter, so the oil is formulated to deal with this. Plus they produce a lot more dirt in terms of combustion by-products. Diesel-rated oils typically have more detergents in them to deal with this (see Using Diesel oil for flushing above)."
So, it looks like the answer is that I need a diesel specific oil... unless anyone else knows any better?
Best wishes to you and yours for the holiday season.:snow_grin

10w40 is a semi synthetic oil. Shouldn't matter what brand you use.Genie

what i was asking was should it specifically say Diesel on the bottle/can? or can I use any semi-synthetic 10W40 oil i.e. possibly for petrol engines?
Have got a can of 10W 40 in HWTHMBO's garage at the moment for another vehicle, but wasn't sure if i could put this into the car?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Get the diesel specific stuff. It's designed not to break down as easily.0

10w 40 was (and still is by some) generally considered a mineral oil.
i would find out exactly what citroen prescribe for your engine. there will be an actual specification for your engine.
most cars will use synthetic or semi syhnthetic these days....work permit granted!0 -
i wouldnt put mineral oil in a Turbo, i thought you were only supposed to use synthetic?0

I have a Peugeot 406 HDi,which has the same engine as yours.
I change the oil every 6k,and use Shell Helix 10/40 diesel oil. (In the blue container) It's about £23 per gallon, and mine has had it for the last 3 years, with no trouble.(In fact it's due now.)
You could also use Millers XFE 10/40,which is one of the best out there, but the choice is yours.(Type Millers XFE into E.Bay.)
That's my mutt in the picture above.0 -
Use a specific diesel oil if you can. They have higher detergent and anti sludge additives.
Having said that, most oils can be used in either, but a "petrol" oil in a diesel will thicken faster, a "diesel" oil a petrol is a bit too high in detergents to leave in for too long, so not a good idea unless you can't get anything else at the time.
Most 10/40 are semi synthetic, go for a turbo rated one as well, they last better. Check on the packaging, as some companies are starting to sneak mineral oils in now.
I change mine every 5 to 6000 miles.0 -
The simple solution is to look at the specifications part of your manual, which will detail the correct grade of oil to use. It should tell you exactly which spec oil is required for your engine.
When it comes to oil, I only use the best. Mobil 1 0W-40 isn't cheap (unless you buy from Costco) but it lasts a hell of a lot longer than mineral or semi-synth.0 -
hmmm *checks Manual*
Total Quartz Diesel 7000 10W-40
Total Quartz Diesel 9000 5W-40
gulp! that sounds expensive!
OK - I get that I need to use diesel specific oil.
I will get some from the garage next time I am there.
Thanks very much (I clicked the button) for ALL your replies.
