Energy Saving Light Bulbs

Does anyone know where I can get energy saving light bulbs cheapest or even a freebie, I want to get them mainly to reduce electricity costs but it seems pointless to pay expensive prices for the bulb only to get it back on the electric bill, any thoughts????

There was a post on the freebies board a few weeks ago about energy saving lightbulbs. Now closed I believe.

Cheapest place I know is Ikea, they're about a pound each, and good quality.

I think you're right, the cheapest are at Ikea but I wouldn't describe them as good quality. I've bought a few of them and the light is a orangey/yellow colour with some of the bulbs emitting a buzzing.

Having said that, I bought a Philips Ecotone screw-in, low energy bulb from John Lewis last Sunday and it lasted until last night (five days)...not quite the six years it claims on the outside of the box.

Have you a Wilkinsons or Robert Dyas near you? Only in the past I've seen special offers on these light bulbs in both these stores. They were a major brand, but can't recall which one/s.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

I've had at least one completely duff low energy bulb which behaved like yours - I returned it and got an exchange. I am certain JL won't quibble about replacing it either.

We've been buying ours from IKEA for years, never had a faulty one. There are a good range of sizes and styles there too,so you can get them to fit quite small enclosed light fittings etc

Maybe they've improved. It was quite a few years ago I last bought one from them. In fact Thomas Eddison was doing an in-store display for them.

Try any of the numerous pound shops that have sprung up.

You don't need me to tell you the price do you?

    ::)
  • Hi guys

I've had quite a few of these energy saving bulbs around the house for years and touch wood and they have worked flawlessly.

However, I have several light fittings that take the small screw cap "R50" spot bulbs and assume they aren't as energy efficient as "energy saver" bulbs.

What I have been wondering recently tho, is whether there is a energy saving bulb that is a direct replacement for the spot bulbs?

    Any ideas guys?

    TIA
