British Gas - New Fixed Price Offer

Options
HiyaI am on a fixed price Electricty & Gas deal with them which comes to an end on the 31st December. I know we will have to pay more this year but they have just written offering me another fixed price deal till August 2010 at a 4% premium to the standard tariff. I really don't know if this is worth doing or how to do a comparison in order to switch?Anyone help? Thanks.

The 4% premium will be 4% above todays standard unit price (not the price you have on your old fixed rate)

Energy prices are expected to fall early in the new year. This is not the time to think about fixing prices (unless they offer a substantial discount to current prices)

I wouldn't fix with anyone at the moment. Prices should be coming down not up.

Their Click Energy 6 tariff is quite competitive though.

Otherwise go to Energyhelpline and put in your details, especially annual consumption and see what comes up.
  • thanks both. That's what I had begun to think. Will do a comparison.

As MSE Martin says, switch with caution at this time

With price changes possible next month it might be worthwhile waiting to see the outcome of those price changes unless you are prepared to do it all again very soon (in which case you might want to take advantage of the £87.50 cashback via quidco for switches to Scottish Power for dual fuel monthly payment by DD).

  • I have been looking into switching energy supplier from British Gas, as a comparison website indicates a saving if I switch.

However, had unfortunately overlooked a letter from British Gas in Dec 08 (have been working away from home for a few months - usually very good about responding to these things!) advising that I would automatically be switched onto their Fixed Price August 2010 tariff unless I wrote back to decline.

I see in the small print of this letter that to cancel incurs a charge of £70 (gas and elec combined). Is it legal to tie me into a new contract UNLESS I say otherwise? Usually you have to actually agree to the new contract. With car/home insurance etc, they can renew your contract automatically but they can't tie you in if you subsequently decide to leave.

Feel really annoyed about this. Does anyone know if they can legally charge me if I leave? (Will probably leave anyway even if have to pay as sick of my account always being too far in credit to be reasonable!).
