Bad news for all holders of sterling.

Good for businesses exporting and no direct impact on the typical consumer who transacts nothing abroad.

  • No great surprise. The UK is in the worst position possible due to government and private debt. Thankfully, the falling pound won't affect most consumers immediately, though it will be bad news in the spring when shops import goods. Prices will rice.

We aren't quite as bad as Iceland yet, but we could get there sooner than we think if borrowing keeps going up.

Not good if your planning a European holiday anytime soon; another 13% down and we have parity.

Bigger problem of course is the devaluation against the $. Since most commodities including oil and the wheat that goes into our bread is bought in dollars, we could see some serious problems in the coming months as manufactures order new supplies.

Does anyone think the devaluation of the pound is deliberate ?

Here's a piece about how a new currency is being planned for the US, Canada and Mexico without anyone knowing, also the consequences it will bring for the ordinary American when the dollar is devalued. I wouldn't be surprised that if we don't join the Euro in the next year, the pound will be devalued and we will all lose huge amounts of money similar to the losses of the Americans/Canadians and Mexicans.

I would be amazed. We moved to decimalisation relatively painlessly in '71 .... primarily because it was a mainly manual procedure with very few computerised systems in existence.

Absolutely not the case now and conversion other than on pure parity will be a factor of 10 worse than Y2k. Govt plans envisage a minimum of 2 years .... and that following an affirmative decision.

Perhaps the secret plan is simply to attain parity .... and then just change all the signs on our keyboards? Much cheaper. ;)

So no-one goes abroad to Europe on holiday?
Of all of the expenditures that the average person has, vacations have always remained high on the list of must keep.
Remember the US is now also way down in value.
I think this will have significant effects on consumers.
For instance, try ferries next year to get to Europe and see if any are still operating.
  • It is inevitable that we are going to join the Euro at some point, what better way for it to happen than the Government and the Press to talk us into a recession, devalue the £ in the way that they have done so far so that it ends up equalling the euro, and therefore making it easier for the UK to transfer over to the Euro???
