Maternity benefits and tax credits

Hi I am looking for some advice for my friend at work regarding tax credits and maternity pay. She is a single mother and she gets both work and child tax credits which is greatt she is elligible for maternity pay for 39 weeks at 90% of her wages but whilst she is off is she still able to claim the working tax credits or will they stop as she is not working she usually works 18 hour a week
Thanks in advance

They will pay WTC and CTC for 39 weeks. The idea being she returns to work then.

She will need to tell them when she goes on maternity leave.

  • Thanks for that her youngest is at nursery and she gets some help towards child care costs will they stop as she is at home, or can they carry on as she may loose the place at the nursery if the child .stops going

she will get CTC and WTC as normal plus the childcare fees as normal for the 39 weeks that she is on maternity leave.

She will also possibly get an increase in payment once her new child is born
  • I still got my nursery fees paid for my eldest whilst on maternity with my son. Im sure they class all maternity leave as still working, that's what I was told my someone on the phone at TC.

    HTH.
  • She will still be considered as being 'working' for the 39 weeks. They will also not count the first £100 a week of her maternity pay as income. For example if she gets £150 a week maternity pay, they will only count £50 of this as income.

When she gives birth she will also get an extra £545 for a year for having a child under the age of one.

She will need to contact them when she goes on leave to explain her new situation, or they will still base her calculation on last year's income and she may not get everything she is due until the end of the tax year.
