Hi,
I have been having trouble with my phone lines, my phone has a terrible connection and my broadband disconnects all the time. We are going to disconnect all the phone extensions (last resort) and just put one extension for the Broadband.
I have a old type connection box on the wall which runs to a plug in box, anyone know can a extension be run straight from the wall box or do you have to go from the plug in box.
Also would be very greatful for any instructions on the wiring as this might save me time looking on the internet (especially when I keep getting disconnected).

You may find THIS POST of use.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Usually BT install the main socket and the house owner extends the wiring themselves. Can you disconnect all the extensions and plug in a telephone and listen?
Is the noise something you can hear? A crackling? Dial 17070 and select 'silent line test'. Press secrecy and listen for the noise.

yes I do, I have checked this with the BT Faults help yesterday (got to say had a young girl and she was excellent), it is clear as a bell when I plug into the main socket inside, that is why I want to disconnect all my extentions and start again.

I see. So you know that you can remove the two screws in the front panel and remove it to reveal another plug/socket. On the back of this panel are some terminals which are there for you to connect your extensions to. You can wire into the NTE5 socket yourself only on the piece that plugs in. If you undo the two screws, then the front should just pull out, what is left on the wall is BT's domain and this seems ok from what you have said.
On the bit you have removed will be all the extension wiring. Remove one wire at a time and and plug back in, as each extension wire is removed retest for noise, and you should soon find the problem extension, and this way you will find out which wire is to which extension, as the phone on that extension will cease to work.
If you are not happy doing that get a telephone doubler adapter and use that for your broadband modem and one phone. If you get a dect cordless then you can add phones without the need for extension sockets.

Just a thaught but phone Bt and ask them if your exchange still has Aluminium wireing ..... Sounds mad but i had a similar problem while minding my mothers house in December expect eventualy the line just died, we called out Bt and the engineer came in plugs something in the socket and said he would eb back in 5 mins, sure enough he was, He advised us that in WWII they used all the copper they could get to make rounds / amo etc and as such they wired the exchanges with aluminium, after 45 + years these wires are burning out or corroding, apparently they wont re do a full exchange instead each time it happens they send an engineer out to put in 3 foot of cable for your line and then they wait for the next person to have a problem.If it doesnt pay rent sell it.

This seems a similar problem to the one we have - sometimes the phones crackle so much we can't hear the other person. We did call out a BT engineer (stupidly) who charged us £60 and told us the problem was ours not theirs and so did nothing to fix it...
We have an extension cable wired into the socket, running out of a hole in the wall and in upstairs for phone and internet up there. The BT engineer did say something about it being the wrong kind of wire for an outside extension but it was the only one we saw in B&Q. If anyone has any suggestions whether a different kind of wire would make a difference I'd be most appreciative.

You need twisted paired wires for telephones. The reason for the pairs being twisted is to reduce the risk of interference and cross-talk.
Be careful not to lay the phone cables close to power cables as doing so could cause inductance from the power cables into the telephone wires. This results in noisy lines, commonly referred to as "white noise" or the sound of "fish frying".0 -
