Crazy New MOT system

I understand all the safety issues with MOT's and how they are really good and all that. However, this new system is a ral nuisance. Apparantly you now have to have the repairs done by the garage, the garage we used to use has cut the days before having the free retest from 14days to 7 days and not only this but you have to leave the car with them overnight for however many days it takes to do any repairs.

Isn't this new computer system a charter for garages to rip-off customers by having it compulsory for them to do the repairs or you pay for another test?

And before anyone says why don't you go to a council mot place. It isn't worth it cos the nearest one is a least 30 miles away.

Just basically wondered what others think of this?

Or you do the repairs however you want and pay for a retest I think.

  • My girlfriend took her car to a garage for an MOT and it came back with nearly £1000 worth of repairs. Then she took it to a second garage for a second opinion and it passed with no repairs!

So am I right in guessing that people wouldn't be able to do that now?

Are you sure this is a "new rule" and not just a garage trying to rip you off?

I cannot see how any law could stop you taking your car (your own property) to another garage and having it fixed....

I have not heard about it and cannot find anything about it by googling....

When did it change - can only go back to the 80s, but you had to pay for a re-test if you removed the car from the MOT station. If the garage does the repairs, they only have to re-test the bits they've fixed which is the main reason they're obliged to 're-test' for free (they shouldn't really need to re-test as the repair is supposed to be to standard).

I think the new MOT system came in at some point earlier this year...it is something I've been looking at as I currently have an old style certificate but mine expires on 30th January 2006.

    £44.15!!

The only gain I can see from this, is that with a new style certificate you can then apply for your tax disc (mine expires end of January....don't like January as my car hits me big style in the pocket) online. Meaning no queues with the down and outs getting their dole money at the Post Office.

    Insurance on 6th February too.

The Labour government finally did something I approve of!

Yer had my MOT like this a month ago, was a pain in the !!!!!! getting back within 24 hours.

But the good side of it is that you dont have to line up at the post office to get your tax anymore, you can do it online.
    Kind Regards

No this is becuase if you have more than 24 hours worth of work then might be better off getting the garange to do it, becuase its a saving of £44 something. This is becuase they only get like £4.50 to do a MOT, this gives them more chance to make money. Lucky ive got a mech thats cheap at £32/hr and I can book in same day.
    Kind Regards

This is the usual bureaucratic farce where the intention is good but the effect is a shambles. Presumably the idea is to stop the serial abusers of the system from getting away with it. I refer to the scum who run around without MOT, Tax, Insurance, and Licence.

This scheme sounds like it will cause grief and inconvenience for the vast majority who play by the rules, yet it will affect the rogues not one jot. They will carry on regardless.

The even more annoying thing is that these people are so easy to spot that if there were any traffic police left they could get them as easily as shooting fish in a barrel!
  • I particulalry agree with the last 2 posters. The whole business of taxing and MOTing your car is now a beaucratic nightmare because you can't get the tax without an mot and with all this mucking about to get an mot it can all be very difficult. And like you say you have to declare SORN if you don't tax your car. What a nightmare!
