Car hire from Faro Airport

Does anyone know of cheap (but reliable!) car hire from Faro Airport? We're looking for something big (6 of us going plus luggage) and I'm getting prices in excess of £450 for the week. Sounds expensive to me...although I may be wrong...haven't done it before! Thanks.

We have just booked to go in 10 day's time. £165 for 3 weeks car hire from Faro with Argus. Only a small car as only 2 of us but the fare of £165 is for THREE weeks. £450 is extortionate, car hire in Portugal is usually quite reasonable. HTH.0

I think the key point here is "something big (6 of us going plus luggage)". A friend looked about a year ago and in the end he just got 2 taxis from airport to villa and back. They then rented a normal car (4/5 seater) to use there but it meant they couldn't all go out together everyday but that didn;t bother those who wanted to be by the pool each and every day. You also dont say when you are going. This month Economy Car Hire http://www.economycarhire.com/quote/results.php?sid=fa8fd117475eab530ddcb4b19b1dafb2 are showing a Ford Galaxy for £265 for a 30 year old driver.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

We have used www.economycarhire.co.uk from Faro and they were very good, as you do not have any excesses and additional drivers are free. Also, there is a petrol station very close to the airport so you can fill up without incurring possible charges.0

I always use Econonly car hire when we go to Portugal.
They have various quotes for various companies that they use. I always use Travelrent
You may get a cheaper quote but Economy Car Hires charges are all inclusive. No insurance excess, no extra driver charges.
Car should be returned with same amount of fuel as picked up with but as mentioned in a previous post there is a petrol station at the airport as well as about 2 miles prior to the airport on the main road in.
Think it is worth taking into consideration that you may get a cheaper quote, but what extras will you have to pay for fully comp insurance and what excesses are there on the policy0 -
Happily recommend Economy Car Hire, I, like the previous poster have always gone with Travelrent and now find that booking direct with Travelrent has been cheaper and you still benefit from the AI insurance, free extra drivers, etc. carhire@travelrent.pt0

We usually use luzcar.com as there are no excesses to pay, although not the cheapest.
Thanks for the Economy Car Hire recommendation (seem popular), I will take a look. For those who use them, is there any excess to pay in case of damage? If not, why do they ask for credit card details?
Thanks in advance, just trying to cut car hire costs.0 -
That query is answered under their help section. We did pay a little extra to cover windscreen/tyre damage.0

Like most car hire companies, it appears you can take out the extra insurance to cover everything. Its not fully comprehensive as standard.
Thanks.0 -
There is little demand for very large cars.
It will often be cheaper to hire two normal sized cars, if you have two drivers. If you would only have 3 in each car, you could make do with 2 very basic cars which are very reasonable value in Portugal.
We used https://www.autorent.pt from Faro who were very reasonable.0 -

My experience was somewhat different. I was impressed with their online claims (below) but when I went to collect the car I was asked did I want extra cover for "wheels, locks and windows" I declined and lo and behold I was charged €100 for a forced lock. This is a blatant scam as if the lock had been forced, then a pair of expensive sunglasses and a passport which I had foolishly left in the glovebox would have been stolen. I also was late for my flight and apologised for not having refuelled the car and asked was it ok and would they do it. I was charged €60 for no more than 20 litres of petrol. When I queried it I was told it was for the fuel and the refuelling service!! As far as I am concerned they are thieves and I will not be using this company again!!
