Nationwide Flexaccount

Options
I was considering opening a Nationwide flexaccount. I'm going to the States in June and would only want to use the account to make ATM withdrawals. I was hoping to shove in some holiday spending money.

I've looked at their website it seems you can only use it as a current account ie to get one I'd have to swap current accounts and I'd rather not! Can I just open it as an account with a debit card, no O/d facility and use it the way I'd planned?

  • Yes,the flex account can be a basic bank account, with no overdraft. This gives you a cash card which you can withdraw £300 or overseas eqivalant each day.I used mine in France and found I got an excellent exchange rate, with no sneaky charges.
You do not have to swop bank accounts, although they will send you forms to try to get you to do this. They want your custom.
This can be applied for online. If they try and give you an upgraded account, phone and explain you just need a basic one.
  • Cheers! Will apply for one after Xmas.
  • When you've set it up make sure you also get the NW Esavings account and use them both online - you can easily swap money online between the two instantly, and you can then keep the minimum you need in the Flexaccount and get the better interest on the Esavings.

This is incorrect. There is no need in swithching account and there is no minimum monthly funding requirment ...

Yes. Depending on your credit history and other circumstances they can give you either a debit card (Visa) or a cash card (Cirrus). Both can be used for fee-free withdrawals abroad.
  • Cheers Grumbler, those very nice peeps gave me the account with a debit card and offered me a credit card as well! so thats me sorted out for the States next year -no loading fees!

  • I`ve openned one too, ready for using overseas, applied for a credit card too. No probs with the flexi a/c, but had to ring them re credit card. It has now arrived but no pin yet, was going to us it over xmas-went for cashback card-never mind.

Only prob i had was guy in branch said that if i took in details of higher credit limit on another card-they would match it. Seems that this is no longer true, waiting to hear from under writters to see if my limit will be raised.

Also no pressure to pay salary in, although I`m going to get tax credits and child benefit in, then use it for grocery. Might be able to keep on track for the grocery challange then!
    JAN Grocery Challange £200
    Spent £154.88

    FEB Grocery Challange £175 21-1 to 20-2
    Spent to date £49.13

Does this account accept bank giro credits from employers as I would like to use this as my main account for my wages to be paid into?
