2001 y reg zafira stalling help please

Hi everyone,
I have a 2001 y reg 1.8 auto zafira.89,000 miles. Bought in 2005. fsh 26,000 miles. dealer serviced every year since. belt changed 81,000 miles.
I have had the engine mamangement light (EML) on for two years now.
When I first saw it on I took it to a local vaux network Q dealer who also services my car.
The car was starting to sound a bit rough and the traction control light would illuminate sometimes. With this on I could only get 5mph out of the car. I could turn ignition off and wait 10 mins. this tended to solve the problem with the traction control.
They charged me for replacing the throttle body, coil pack and spark plugs.
cost £650
The EML light stayed off for about 25 miles.
When I took it back they said no problem could be detected but there were some fault codes present. They reset the EML and off I went.
The EML stayed off for about 25 miles.
I took the car back, no fault present although faults were recorded they said. They reset the EML and off I went.
The EML stayed off for about 25 miles.
I took it back. This time they said it was probably an o2 sensor.
Cost £150. The EML light stayed on and I could not get my money back.
This was all last year and I have been driving around fine with the EML on although mpg is a little high.
Lateley the car has been sounding really rough when first started.
I checked all the air hoses.
There was a jubilee clip missing fom the elbow joint below the air filter housing. The two joints were hardly making contact. I fixed that with a new clip. Also a clip was not fastened on the filter housing. I fixed that as well.
The car seemed fine for about 25 miles then the EML lit up AGAIN.
I unclipped the air mass flow meter (?) between the filter housing and the top of the engine. It had a mesh inside which appeared to be fine. I replaced exactly how I found it.
I also replaced the air filter today.
Now the car idles erratically in Park.
If i give it some gas the car just stalls, unable to rev the car at all.
tonight I tried it with the headlights on.
All the lights dimmed as the car was idling. jumping from 500 - 1000 rpm. the lights would dim at 500 rpm and go bright at 1000 rpm.
Help me please.

have you checked the map sensor and any idle sensors? there are a lot of faults with these on ehre at the moment, maybe try and find an owners club?0

I do not know what a map sensor is. Before I checked the airflow meter the car wasn't too bad. Now it cant even idle.0 -
This isnt much help, but a friend of mine had a leased 06 Zafira with similar problems to yours and was in and out of garage. mileage was 70000 and they have now taken it back and given up with it.0

:j Can't believe it. Just had to have another look this morning and found a tube the width of my finger had popped off the back of the engine. It connects with the air filter hose between the housing and the air flow meter. Simply connected it back and YES IT WORKS PERFECTLY.
