Spark Energy

Apparently a new niche supplier to the lettings market.
landlords and agents who get their tenants to switch to Spark get commission.
Anyone (tenant or LL or agent) any experiences good or bad.....????
Any feedback appreciated I have 2 tenants in bits over the situation....shan't bore everyone with the details but their details were automatically passed to Spark when they used an agent (who acts ONLY in an introducer capacity to me) authorised (unauthorised!!!) a switch.
Oh...the mess! I've been working on undoing it all now for 3 hours today alone.

Feedback appreciated.

  • Yeah...read that before I posted, just wanted to see if any other experiences. Quite like to know what the commission rate per switch is and if any LL use them...I'd never heard of them until last week!
    Any positive experiences?

I changed to Spark in November last year and am yet to receive a correct bill. So I have been paying on estimates which I think are too high. I have phoned hundreds of times, written and emailed and still have not received anything.
My emails and messages have been ignored on numerous occassions. I would really not recommend them at all.

Tenants (and LLs) need to stand firm against this issue which seems to be becoming a more standard LA practice. Complaints to the OFT and local Trading Standards office, plus local MP & Housing Minister recommended.

Where the tenant pays for the utilities, it is clearly an unfair & restrictive practice to seek to control which supplier they use. It is right that the property owner knows which company is used for ease of tenancy changeover but that does not include what amounts to effectively dictating the utility costs, plus making a profit by doing so.

Totally agree with you. The only good thing to say about Spark Energy is that we DO have gas at home. Joined in Nov, finally connected in Feb. Still waiting for contract, gas bill (despite 3 meter readings) or statement. Emails and letters never answered - and forget phone calls - they never answer the phone but I do normally give up after 15-30 mins at a time and leave a message for them to call me back - they don't.

The only thing they are hot on is increasing the price and direct debit (around 40% this year from memory - and only because I have checked their prices on their website, but this should not be my contract prices) and collecting one's monthly direct debit ! - how much do they owe me ? You tell me. Consumer Focus or Trading standards need to get weighed in and close them down.

The only advice to give anyone is STAY AWAY.

  • I recently moved into a rented property and the next thing i knew spark energy have taken over my supply without my consent which Im currently going to complain to the ombudsman also they rejected the gas request from southern electric who were the supplier at the time I moved in, what a cheek. Im not sure what to do next but am going to complain to the ombudsman and I dont see why I should have to have any contact with them in fact it makes me not want to pay their bill. Im so angry about this. damn them!

the same thing's just happened to me & I'm furious!

I'm trying to get them to cancel, but I can't get through to customer services on the phone & their CS email currently has a turnaround of up to 10 working days

Do not even get me started on Spark, they have to be the worst company I have ever dealt with. If anyone is thinking of switching to spark I urge you not to! They seemed ridiculously expensive, I supposedly paid my final bill with them when I moved out if my flat. I then received a letter 2 weeks late to my old flat telling me that i owed them £650- I was assured by the man on the phone who took my final bill that the bill was settled, I asked him to confirm this in writing. I have been waiting over a month for this to come through. I have spent so long so many times waiting for them to answer that people in my office know their hold music off by heart! I have sent them numerous e mails, left messages on their answer machine but no one will reply to me! I am so angry with them because I cannot get the deposit back on my flat until I have a copy if the final bill. I have now left it in the hands if my letting agents but they cannot get through either.

I do not know how they think that it is ok to run a company this badly!! The link that is given above has a few positive feebacks on it- I reckon spark I've got their employees to write these rave reviews of the company instead of answering any e mails or phone calls!

much to my surprise, after reading the scathing reviews & opinions about Spark's appalling customer service, they called me back (I did leave them a message 'mentioning' the ombudsman though :D) & after asking me why I didn't want their services  promised to cancel 'my account' & sent out a confirmation email

but I don't trust them, so I've sent a recorded delivery letter asking for cancellation, I think belt & braces is the best approach with these kind of cowboys

as far as I can see, all of those positive reviews are written by 'anonymous' & all have a suspiciously similar tone  every other review slates them & given your experience & that of others, no small wonder
