I have been lurking on this forum for a bit but never posted, so hello to you all. I really need some advice on freezing things. We have never had a freezer before and have now got one :j !!! It is a chest freezer thing. I am intending to use it for freezing meat, HM meals (i.e. make double amount and freeze half), HM pastry etc. BUT I don't know anything about how long it takes to defrost things
and I am especially worried about defrosting meat properly. Any advice on it at all would be welcome, bear in mind we don't have a microwave either!!! Also any unusual things you can freeze that a novice freezer person wouldn't think of ?? Thanks.

We only have a fridge freezer, but as both OH & I are out all day we grab something from the freezer first thing in the morning and leave it covered on the site. By the time OH gets home it has fully defrosted, and is cooked by my OH's fair hands..Baby Year 1: Oh dear...on the move

It's very much a how long is a piece of string question, I'm afraid.
It depends very much on what type of food it is and, especially for meats, how thick the joint is, what is the ambient temperature in your kitchen, or the setting in your fridge.
I tend to allow things to defrost overnight in the fridge and very definitely don't defrost chicken anywhere else. It's usually easy enough to prod the thing you're defrosting to find out if any of it is still frozen and nuke it for a few minutes at a time if you need it done any quicker.
If you look in the Cooking section of the MEGA Index sticky at the top of the Old Style forum listing there are a number of threads listed under "freezing" and some of those discuss defrosting too.
