Pls Read If You Have Abbey C/a Important

For a year now, that I know of, possibly longer, Abbey have been levelling erroneous instant interest overdraft charges. This is where you are going to be charged 40p, 50p etc for an overdraft situation, when you were not overdrawn. I have complained each time and there are postings from me and others on these forums.

This first happened to me last November, and has happened twice since, and also twice on my son's account.

Yesterday, in response to my recent complaint, I received a telephone call from a senior customer resolutions manager. She told me that Abbey have been aware of this problem for as long as it has been ongoing, but she also advised they have been unable to fix it. I asked if Abbey had written to all their customers advising the problem, but she thought not. She also told me all CS staff were aware of the problem. When I asked how come all the different people who had dealt with each different complaint did not seem to know of this problem, she could not answer. She also advised that in the 2nd calendar month following the erroneous debit, the money is credited back. I am unable to confirm this, because as soon as I see my statement and see they are going to charge me, incorrectly, I request it be sorted.

There are those of you, like me, who have complained about these erroneous charges. I would guess that some people have seen a small amount of instant overdraft interest and believed it to be due. What I need to know from those of you who are as unfortunate as I to bank with Abbey is, have you automatically got the interest charge back. Please go and look out your statements and post here. I would like to be able to go back to this CSA and suggest she is wrong.

    Hi dollywops,

This has been happening to me since December 2007 (mostly 'Advance Overdraft Interest' variant). The first three months were refunded following my phone calls, but the March thru June charges were not despite my numerous phone calls. July thru September I had no charges and October's was not charged following my phone call.

I did receive £30 from the Complaints Department eventually.

    Best regards.

    Hi Dollywops,

Yes - this has happened to me on several occasions mostly during the last 10 months. Each occasion, I have complained at the branch, the money had been refunded. However, on my June statement, I was charged £47.41 for Adv overdraft int and Instant overdraft int. The branch were unhelpful so I complained formally by letter. Within 2 months I received the money back with a letter apologising for the inconvenience and reassurance that the error has been rectified. I also received £55.00 compensation. However, the problem is far from rectified as every month I am charged with debit interest. Last month it was £1.06 for no apparent reason and quite frankly, my patience is now running out. I think I will refer this debacle to the Financial Ombudsman.

I noticed a credit of 36p in my account yesterday. This relates to an erroneous debit of 36p on 1 May 2008. I was told, not that I believed it for one minute, that these erroneous charges were being corrected 2 month's later. This is 6 months!

I think it might now be time to contact the Banking Ombudsman and see what they can do with regards to Abbey putting its house in order.

Looks like I need to be entering into a dispute with Abbey. We've been charged £1.50 this month.

It looks like they have charged us for days when the account went overdrawn, but I make transfers on the same day to bring it back into credit.

    For example

    1st Oct balance nil
2nd Oct cash withdrawal £100 overdrawn by £100
    2nd October transfer £150
End of 2nd October balance £50.

Assume account has a £200 approved overdraft limit.

I can find nothing to say when an account is overdrawn for charging purposes.

    Hi daveyjp,
Its on the front page of the current account statement letter, towards the bottom, under the interest entry. It states that interest will be charged daily on any outstanding amount.

    Regards.

PS. BTW For the latest accounting month my statement showed no charge, although there were several days when I had been 'overdrawn' (but within my approved overdraft limit) during the day for some hours. I transferred in from a linked account to be in credit by the close of business on each day (Note: I always manage my account in this way. )

Our account is managed in a simialr way. We weren't overdrawn overnight on any occasion last month, but the charge is still being levied.
  • This happened to me once in July and took until September to be corrrected although I had phoned as soon as the statement arrived. I have had my account with Abbey for at least 7 years, I only keep statements for that long, and the account has never been overdrawn and there have been no 'same day' transactions that could cause the computer to get upset.

Today the same thing happened, 78p of Instant Overdraft Interest to be debited on 12 January and again I have phoned in and complained. The first time I got cut off while the operator was supposed to be transferring my call to a colleague as his screen couldn't access the relevant screen:mad: I wait for the 12 January to see what happens.

And here we are 12 January and guess what - the interest has been debited and no sign or the promised reversal  Even phoning the 0800 number gets through to India and staff who can't cope 'off script' Now i have to wait another 7 to 10 working days to see if this credit is applied correctly. I'm just glad these debits don't send me overdrawn they'd never get that one sorted out.
  • I would advise anyone affected by this to write and complain. This error has been on a Master Ticket for ages. The IT dept want shooting for not resolving this issue.
