wireless networking advice

At the moment I have a desktop and a laptop connected via a wired router, I would like to go wireless and have seen a Thomson SpeedTouch 576 Wireless ADSL Router which I am thinking of buying

The new router will plug into my desktop via ethernet cable and my laptop has a wireless card already fitted, do I also need a wireless card in my desktop (not sure if I need a wireless one in my desktop, because the router will be directly plugged into it)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

    Wow, what a quick reply, thanks for that I am going to buy one tomorrow now!! Just hope it is not as bad as setting up the wired one!!

    I haven't used the model you are thinking of buying.. the netgear DG834G is a good model, and neat looking, if you want an alternative option (should be around the £60 mark)

    Please read all recent posts on wireless security (wpa encryption, ssid, change default password, mac address filtering) if you are not aware of what you need to do to make your network secure..

    If you are buying from one of the big chains, checkout their web-price first and get them to match it, as they often try to charge more in the shop.

    Also don't forget to set up the secuirty features of the wireless side or you will have unsecure acess for anyone to use.

    At the moment I have a netgear DG834 wired router which has been brilliant but the wireless one is quite expensive at £88 but will have a search to see if I can find it cheaper, because I am on aol I would prefer to use their recommended routers, both the netgear and the thomson are supported by aol

    Good point about the security features, will make sure I set them up as earlier on I must have been logged on to the neighbours internet!! Must tell them to set theirs up as well!!

    the netgear 834G should be £60-65, check the shops web price, and get them to price match, where are you buying it from.?

    The dg834gt is a bit more expensive, as it has a faster speed, but it will make no difference to your downloads speed, the G will easily cope with your max download speed..

    Incidentally, don't throw your other router away, if you chain your routers together, it will provide extra protection for your main PC, as it will isolate your laptop completely from your other PC (unless you want to transfer files between the 2)

    hi, can anyone give me some advice on the best wireless home network starter pack, pref from argos as its the only place i have found them nr where i live. thanks xx

    You need to give more information before we can recommend any wireless equipment.

    Are you on broadband? Who is your ISP?

    What computer(s) do you have? If you have a laptop it might be already enabled for wireless so that means one less wireless device to buy.

    Can ask advice on what I will need/suggestions of make etc

    I have a Dell Dimension 2400. It has a broadband connection from Ntlworld(now Virgin). I have just ordered my son a Dell Inspiron 1501 which I understand has a wireless card fitted. I am not bothered about a wireless connection to my desktop just what I need so my son can share my internet access.
