But you're protected under the FSCS scheme.

    So savings will be safe.

But can a cross-border bank be bailed out in the EU?

I suggest you take out a couple of months rent money tomorrow. Sorry you're in that situation. Good luck.

Well looks like I will be spreading my money out (what little is left) a bit more now! How long does it take to set up a new bank account with NS&I or Northern Rock? I heard that they are inundated with applicants and are very slow/not even taking any new accounts...

The trouble with news like this is that it is kind of self-fulfilling.
News: 'Bank X could be next to go down'
Public: 'Damn, I better take all my money out'

Yes, in times like this the markets will maybe react to news of substantial short positions being taken by hedge funds by panic selling, which will make it a self fulfilling prophecy.
  • maybe some rumour mongers, ahead of some short selling tomorrow..

i dont think all the banks can suddenly be in deep sh.. SOMEONE is buying the shares, houses etc at low low prices..

whoever their bank is, must be doing very well!

Thanks for the heads-up. I'll be shorting them in the morning.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Just moved 2K from A+L to my HSBC account.

Don't want to be caught short in 'reclaiming' my money if it happens and there's bills to pay. It may or may not become a self-fulfilling prophecy but if it does I don't want to be stuck in it!

    Oh (insert naughty word here)

All my money goes into Abbey and I have an ISA there too but it's not possible for me to just move money out and go elsewhere as those on benefits cannot just open any old account! They have to mess about going from bank to bank looking for basic accounts which is not really suitable to my needs (direct debits, easily available funds via a debt card, electron just will not do, tesco's don't take it online!)

Plus all my childrens accounts are there too!

Arrrggghhhh (insert another rude and naughty word)
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.
