Nationwide upgrade to a Debit Card

I was told today that you have to have an account with them for 6 months before they will upgrade you from a cash card account, then you could be credit checked again for a new account.
She also said that if you have your salary or paid in £500 a month, after 3 months they would automatically upgrade you.

I opened an account with them and got given a Debit Card straight away so I dont think they give everyone a Cash Card from the off.0

It's simply not true that you have to wait to get your card upgraded. Whether or not you get given a visa debit card straight away depends entirely upon how you do on Nationwide's credit scoring. I got a visa debit card when I opened my flexaccount. In a rut? Can't get out? Don't know why?
It's time to make that change.

I've had an account with them since I was 3 (32 years), have a regular income going in every week, never had a cheque bounce, never been overdrawn and have lived in this house more than 3 years and still they wont let me have a debit card. I'm going to go in there some time this week and ask why as I really dont know what they must think I've done wrong.2008 Comping ChallengeWon so far - £3010 Needed - £230Debt free since Oct 20040

I recall a few posts saying that NW don't upgrade flexaccount at all. They recommended just to apply for a second account with them. I have two now, although the first one was with a debit card and the second is with a cash card.black-saturn wrote:I've had an account with them since I was 3 (32 years), have a regular income going in every week, never had a cheque bounce, never been overdrawn and have lived in this house more than 3 years and still they wont let me have a debit card. BS, don't bother going into the branch on London Road North - they are useless. Give the main call centre a call and ask to be put through to new applications. They'll let you apply over the phone. If they still won't let you get a visa debit flexaccount, you'll need to get your credit reference files from the various credit reference agencies. Chances are something's showing up as bad on there, or you've been financially associated with someone who has a bad credit reference. In a rut? Can't get out? Don't know why?

I applied for a nationwide flexaccount and they only offered a cashcard (as well as a £78000 mortgage).
After a while I asked for an upgrade and they said a new a/c would need to be opened and re-scored.
Just switched to smile and never looked back.

Along the same lines....
I have a Lloyds TSB gold service acc and so does my partner. We have both been with Lloyds for some time and when we went to open a joint account they offered us a Visa Electron, which is pretty useless.
We told them that we'd like to cancel the application, but the branch manager stepped in and ordered us proper Visa debit cards.
Just shows if you kick up a stink and show them clearly that you manage your account well that there is no reason why they can't over-ride the system.
Don't give up.

Visa Electron is not useless at all - you will get surcharged by EasyJet (and RyanAir too I think) if you pay with an ordinary debit card, but not with a Visa Electron card. Your best bet would be to get both if you can.0
