Venice on a day trip

My son and I are going to Venice on a day Trip this week courtesy of the free Ryan air flights. We haven't been for about 3-4 years and wondered if anyone had any tips that has been recently.

As far as I can find the Ryan air bus still runs from Treviso to the outskirts of Venice and I can pick up a water bus from there. Any tips though would be welcome.

I went about 3/4 years ago for a weekend. best meal was at a place called Bacaro Jazz, very close to Rialto Bridge. Think we also had a good meal in campo san polo
  • We were there for a day in august - first tip don't go in august as its heaving with people ;) though that said it was easy enough to get away from the crowds once you got a block or two from the main attractions.

the day ticket for the waterbuses was worthwhile (about 14 euro) as it was a lot easier to hop on and off without worrying about the prices

route 1 goes up and down the grand canal and makes a good starting point for a trip

for a cheap go on a gondola try the traghetti, which go back and forth across the grand canal in places where there aren't bridges (0.50 euro per person)

I really enjoyed wandering about and seeing where places/streets went to, its really quite compact and its possible to walk from right across the central area in 30-40 min even with stopping for ice creams!

quite a bit of info on here too

I've said it before and I'll keep saying it...

I CAN'T STRESS ENOUGH - DO NOT BE HERDED TOWARDS THE WATER TAXIS...
We made this mistake - the operation is very smooth - the "helpful" guides wait for the Ryanair bus passangers as they step off the bus and kindly lead them to the rip-off water taxis. There are police officers around who turn a blind eye.
The water buses are at the opposite end of the bus station - a very short walk.
PLEASE warn as many people as possible as you get off the bus to prevent ruined first impressions to this wonderful city.

That was 6 years ago - last year we went again and, on our way to the bus station, saw the same thing still happening. (We were able to warn a few people this time!)

By the way - Venice in a day is definately do-able. We did it last year (almost - arrived the night before and stayed near the airport). We spent a long time feeding the pigeons in St Mark's Square (my eldest son and dh loved it - my youngest son and I were a little afraid!).

Definately get the waterbus one day pass. Try and sit at the front of the boat (we let a bus load go, so we could be first on the next one), and take the trip all the way from the Piazza Roma to St Mark's square. On the way back, you can see a completely different view, if you do it at night.

And just keep walking around, getting lost - you're never too far away from a sign to the Rialto or St Mark's Square.
