Faulty Cylinder Heads on a batch of 2008 Honda Civics (1.8 Petrol only)

We purchased a brand new 1.8EX i-shift Civic at the end of June, Honda reliabilty being the deciding factor as previous Honda drivers covering 200,000 faultless miles. We clocked up 800 miles in the first week and were surprised to see the oil warning light illuminate. We checked the oil and found the dipstick was dry, so off to Halfords to buy some fully synthetic oil. I phoned the dealer and arranged to have the car checked out. A week later it went into the workshop, we picked the car up and were told it was a "feature" of the new engine.

Over the next 4 weeks we added another 4 litres of oil (approx 1litre per 800 miles)- not cheap as Mobil 1 is £48 per 5 litres. We phoned the garage again and booked her in for another check and had a call to say that the cylinder head needs replacing! So it isn't a feature any longer, this being the good news

The fault is quite specific as the cylinder head has been machined out of tolerance and results in the valve stem scoring the valve guide in cylinder 3. Oil passes into the combustion chamber and is burnt off. We have since found that several other 08 Civics (supplied May-June) have had the same problem but our dealer tells us that Honda(UK) are unable to identify the affected vehicles, but this is not true as all the affected cars are traceable. The reality is that it is cheaper to deal with these issues on a case by case basis rather than issue a global recall. Shame on you Honda!

I asked the dealer to contact Honda to ask why this has occurred and to explain why I should be "happy" with a new cylinder head on a brand new £20k car. They were unable to explain but have offered to replace the cylinder head, the catalytic converter and both oxygen sensors (both subjected to unnecessary oil contamination leading to premature wear). I have also been given an additional 2 year extension to the manufacturer warranty.

I am still bitterly disappointed with the whole situation as we have purchased a brand new car supplied with a known fault

So if you've recently purchased a new 1.8 Honda Civic keep a close eye on your oil consumption!!!

If you have any probs with your civic visit the website below. You'll find they're more helpful than your dealer or HUK ;)

Many thanks - I'm already there! I totally agree it's a brilliant site with lots of useful info:

I have posted on here to expose the problem with the aim of helpiing anybody else in the same position. I've no idea how many cars have been produced with this inherent fault but feel it's important broadcast the issue by any means available. I have written to the motoring press and VOSA as I feel this issue warrants a recall.
  • i guess it was not known until the problems started coming in, as long as the problem is now fixed i would be really pleased with the 2 extra years warranty :)

    Hope its all sorted

Yes I don't blame you. Touch wood, all seems to be fine with my car after a year but there does seem to be too many issues going with other people's experience. I do love my civic but wish I had the leather & PR like you :D
