I bought this the other day http://www.misco.co.uk/productinformation/~510169~/USB%202.0%20512MB%20FLASH%20KEY%20DRIVE.htm I hope its what you meant as the names of devices vary quite a bit.

The thing I like about this one is the Lifetime Warranty (scroll down a bit)
I reckon this is a mistake so thats why I did a screen capture of the page... ;)

Have a look at https://www.ebuyer.com, they have a good range at reasonable prices

  • I have huge problems with my memory stick - although I have managed to transfer files to it from my floppy disk, I now keep getting "cannot copy (file name): the directory or file cannot be created" When I press OK it then comes up with "the target cannot handle this type of document".

When trying to save word documents to the floppy drive it comes up with "word cannot complete ethe save due to a file permission error (e:\filename.doc).

I have only had this memory stick a few weeks but have consistently had problems.

    Help!

Sounds like either the floppy drive is knackered or the floppy disk your using is.

Try using another floppy disk drive or another floppy disk and see if you get the same problems.

  • CIS - I am having problems with numerous floppy disks and my whole computer setup is only a couple of months old, so I am not so sure it is the floppy drive which is at fault.
  • a pretec aqua 256mb stick from play.com 15.99 is the smallest one I've seen, it's just a bit bigger than a thumbnail, and very neat
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
  • You want to be careful, as "Memory Stick" is actually a proprietary name for the memory cards used in lots of Sony cameras and handhelds. Bit like Hoover, all portable memory is now called memory stick.

I assume you're after what is technically called a flash drive you put in your USB port. If so, they are fairly ubiquitous nowadays, and are almost handed out with the cornflakes. SWMBO got a couple free from drug reps, along with insulated mugs, post-it notes, etc.

If you look on google (or pricerunner/kelkoo/dealtime) and you'll find hundreds of the things. 128Mb is quite small nowadays - you can get upto 4Gb (~4000Mb) which should last a bit longer. Think about what he'll be using it for.

Just be aware that the actual memory is very cheap nowadays, and the cost of the kit comes from how they are wired up and put together. Buying cheaper means cheaper construction, so they won't appreciate being left in the bottom of a briefcase. Also backup it up regulary so that you don't lose anything important if it does fail...

    Or pen drive.. ;)

Same thing so many names,
  • They have them in so many places, now: watches, phones. I even saw some sunglasses with memory in one arm and the USB connector in the other. Did look wierd, though... ;)
