Tonight for the first time I saw a coin counting machine in Asda. I'd never seen one before so I thought I'd see how long theyd been around.
You take your piggy bank of coppers in, tip in the contents, they get auto counted and it gives it you some notes back. BUT - it keeps 7.5% for itself!!!!
A license to print money!!! My missus got us one of the smaller home versions for xmas. The littlun loves watching it sort. I might stand outside Asda and undercut them - 5% anybody?
How long have these been around?

Our local savacentre has had one for over 10 years and we have used it on more then one occasion. DH had this phase where all small coins were chucked into a sweetie jar at the end of the day and when it was full off he went to savacentre
7.5% was a small price to pay to have £30-£40 pounds of pennies sorted and exchanged in a matter of moments esp as the bank wouldnt except more then £5 of copper in one transaction0 -
There is one in each of my local ASDA and Sainsburys
Been there well over a year, probably nearer two, or maybe even longer.
I've watched hundreds of mindless individuals tipping hard earned cash into it in order to get a voucher that's redeemable at the checkouts.
Talk about throwing money down the drain !
I enquired of one individual with a very large bag of coins if she would consider burning a £5 note out of every £100 that she had in her handbag if the remaining £95 was then exchanged at the customer services desk for a shop voucher for the same amount (ie £95)
Her reply? DON'T BE STUPID !
Thing is, sometimes it is so popular that there is actually a queue in order to use it !

I've never had any problems depositing HUGE amounts of change at either of my branches of NatWest bank or Nationwide building society.
Just need to put in the little bags that they provide. There are 10 types of people in the world. ‹(•¿•)›(11)A104.28S94.98O112.46N86.73D101.02(12)J130.63F126.76M134.38A200.98M156.30J95.56J102.85A175.93

You dont get an instore voucher.
You get a reciept for the amount which you take to customer services who give you the cash0 -

We dont happen to bank at Nationwide
And yes I have sat there for an hour or more, counting it out and sorting into the bags and making a trip into town, spent 20 minutes in a queue, just to be told they wont take more then a fiver at a time
So in my book 7.5% is a small price to pay for convenience0 -

And you allow them to treat you like that?
The last time my bank made me made me queue for 10 minutes, the regional manager got a lecture about customer service, I got an apology from the branch manager and they introduced new facilities to prevent such a reoccurrence.0 -
The last time I tried to change my change in the Nationwide they limited it to £15 until I kicked up a scene at the counter, they then allowed me to deposit the £41 I had.
I've used the machines at Asda's and although the charges are expensive it certainly helps with our shopping, at least once a year0 -

All those people could be wrong ... or maybe they have better things to do!Personally, I too have neither time nor inclination to count coins, put them in bags, drive to my bank, stand in line, etc. I'm also not selfish enough to force people behind me to wait while the cashier checks it all.
The coin counters are a great service for people who CHOOSE to pay a reasonable charge for a valuable, time/hassle saving service. If you prefer to count coins and save some money then that's your choice too.0
