Royal Mail - Track and trace (rhymes with waste of space).

I have no idea why anyone would want to use the RM track and trace service. I feel like I have wasted the money that it cost me.
I sent my sons passport application (including his birth certificate) off to Peterborough on Friday. Everyday this week I have used the online service to track it and it comes back with
"Recorded Signed For™ items are only tracked after the item has been delivered. Depending on whether the item was sent first or second class, this may be a few days after posting. Please try again later.
Information on your item is not yet available online".
Not happy that it doesn't appear to have arrived I called them - got the local number using "saynoto0870" (thanks).
The guy didn't have a clue where it was or whether it has even been delivered. His suggestion was to call the passport office to see if had been delivered - Honestly! (thanks again to saynoto0870).
The chap I spoke to there said "yes everything is fine" to which my response was "Yes! What's fine? You've received the application?" The chap then said "Yes and the application is approved and the passport has been printed - You should receive it any day - It's been sent back out to you".
So while RM haven't got a clue where their a*se is - the Passport Office have turned around an application in less than a week. Awesome contrast in customer service.
I wonder if RM will give me back my money??
Well done Passport Office by the way - really well done!

same experience as mine last week - sent off 3 passport applications for children via special delivery. Nver got confirmation of delivery and got passports 3 days after I had made visa payment over phone - cracking good service by Passport OfficeBaby Milk Action is a non-profit organisation which aims to save lives and to end the avoidable suffering caused by inappropriate infant feeding.0

I sent an important letter to the tax office, using recorded delivery . I had the same experience and eventually had to resend everything.
Recorded delivery doesn't guarantee delivery and if noone signs for it for any reason you're no better off than using normal first class or second class post.
Later I found that the first, recorded delivery letter had in fact been delivered but not signed for.
Now, if something's important I used special delivery, which is very expensive but more reliable, in my opinion.0 -

Tends to happen with delivery to large organisations as items are delivered in bulk and individual items dont get scanned although obviously they should... You will be 6 First Class stamps back for an unscanned item, only £2.16 but better than nothing I suppose.0

my problem is with RD. at uni my ebay parcels were always posted through letter box unless too large. they never cared for sig... good job i was honest or i coulda ripped off a lotta ppl. i stopped using RM not long after when things suddenly 'went missing' or took 2 weeks to arrive.
i wouldnt expect passport ones to be signed for, i mean they receive thousands a day im sure.0
