OK, I originally posted this in the Free Software thread in relation to OpenOffice, but I guess it relates to any office suite of applications. I thought it best not to take the other thread OT, so I moved it here:
What are you people doing with all this office software?
I'm always mildly curious as I had it all installed on my Mac, and then realised about a year later that I had never even used it once, and so I got rid of it all. TextEdit does me just fine for typing letters.
This is a sincere question: do you have it because it's all free, or is there something I'm missing out on here?

I use Microsofts but in all fairness I only use WORD. I use powerpoint for when someone sends me an email with a powerpoint attachement. Think thats about it really. In 4 years I dont recall ever using anything else.:idea:0

When I used to teach, I used it for Schemes of work and Lesson plans in Word. Used Excel Spreadsheet for data analysis (tracking of student marks ect).
Now, because I dont qualify for the educational licence and not working atm, I have open office and I use the spreadsheet to do my budgeting.
And because im a miserable old sod, I use OfficeWriter to write complaint letters to the council ect (Victor Meldrew anybody) . Thats about it now, handy to have to knock up the odd letter."Well, that sounds like a pretty good deal. But I think I got a better one. How about I give you the finger, and you give me my phone call"

As I mentioned in the thread, personal use of any application in an office package is very seldom, but for work I use Office 2007. I think it's fairly self explanatory which each package is used for, so I won't bore everyone with "I make presentations with Powerpoint" etc.
In fairness, I use Notepad more than anything at home because it's easy to copy details from websites and keep them in a text file until I need them. Ctrl-v + Alt+F+S is easier than trying to find a pen and a piece of paper.0 -
So far it doesn't seem to be "can't live without it" software (at least not for home users), which is weird, as it's one of the first things many people seem to want to install on their computers.0

Hi. I'm glad I came across this thread. I have just ordered a new computer, as my other one is about to die. We currently have Microsoft Office and I use Excel & Word. My son has just gone into Y10 at the high school (GCSE's next year) so uses Word & Powerpoint for homework assignments.
I have not yet ordered or bought any Microsoft software for the new computer.
I have recently come across OpenOffice (free download). I haven't done anything with it as yet but to me it looks like it will do the job that Microsoft is currently doing.
What do you think? Is it worth forking out £100+ for Microsoft, or would you simply download the free OpenOffice software onto the new computer when it arrives??There We Are Then !!0 -

Your Son should qualify for Office 2007 Ultimate for less than £40 from here, which is an absolute bargain.0 -
I use Open Office and I probably use it 5 days out of seven.
I coach a kids football teams and use Calc for keeping my register of attendance at training up to date and planning my teams, writer for correspondence meetings agenda and notes and Presentation for planning the sessions (I find that at Under 8's a visual plan is a great training aid)
Add to that we use it for family letters and my boys use it for their homework and Sschool projects.
It's certainly a 'must have' in our houseIt's taken me years of experience to get this cynical0 -
I use it at work for pivot tables, charts, macros and suchlike, with the experts doing the VB parts0

I personally need Microsoft, as I use Outlook to connect to exchange servers (do any other mail clients?), and use excel for mathematical moddeling occasionally. Very powerful tool people often overlook.Ubuntu is an ancient African word, meaning: 'I can't configure Debian'.0
