BG 2011 Fix v BG Click

I am aware that this thread might cause apoplexy amongst those resolutely opposed to any form of fixed tariff, but it is worth at least considering the arguments for and against.

I have worked out the difference between BG's Standard tariff and BG Click 5 for the consumption of 'Mr Average UK' e.g. 20,500/3,300 kWh gas/electric.

For my area Standard tariff at present works out at £1,239 pa and BG Click 5 at £839 pa.

Making the assumption that BG apply the same increase to Click as they recently applied to their standard tariff i.e. 35% gas and 9% electric(and of course we have no idea if that will be the increase) then BG Click will work out at £1,081 pa.

So a saving on Click of £158 pa(13%) over BG Standard.

Now you can fix BG Standard at their current rates to 30 Sept 2011.

So your gamble will be if/how much BG Click will increase before 30 Sept 2011 and when those increases will occur.

I do appreciate you might find other tariffs cheaper than Click 5 after their rise, - but they are likely to increase if Click increases again.

I also accept that, as with every gamble, you could win or you could lose.

However for many people the peace of mind in having a tariff fixed for the next 3 years will be very important.

Worth considering??????

  • Of course it's worth considering! However, we have a desparate PM who needs to burst out of his timid lethargy and do something about the things the GB public, rightly or wrongly, feel aggrieved about or he's out of a job and so are many of his MPs - and high on that list MUST be the energy comapnies! I know they have started 'tinkering' by getting them to put 'free' insulation into some people's homes etc but the Govt are obviously thick enough to not realise that, eventually, that will increase their tariff rates to compensate for the upfront cost plus the 'lost' revenue from these naturally warmer homes. I expect some seemingly 'tough' action on utility companies when these filter through which hopefully may force them to a pre-determined %tage rising of prices. The ones who fixed will not potentially benefit if this happens.

PS Not one mention of falling oil prices in that post, lol.

    Part of the gamble!

Not certain that your anti-Government rant(however much justified) adds much to the subject of this thread, which is the merits/demerits of fixing.

Read it again, it was more a prediction of what they might do to the utility companies than a rant. Desperate needs call for desparate measure and all that. What the Govt 'do' with the energy companies is entirely relevant to whether you should fix or not. Certainly to 2011...

  • I am considering this very scenario, searched a lot for some insight into the hinted at price increases in January but of course its all speculation - nothing more. I am on BG standard rate (yes I know! I know!) so BG click looks £600 cheaper right now for my KW usage but surely the matching rise on this tariff has to be mega-imminent? possibly by the time my switch was processed it could be virtually pointless? I am very tempted by Eon 5 capped until July 2010, even that is £115 cheaper PA than BG standard!!! so something to gain and if prices go up 20% in January I will be way better off. If the regulator can't stop them profiteering from us surely at least he could get them to be up front with the timetable for price rises?
I don't know what to do but I am going to click something by midnight tonight.
  • Cardew, have you checked out the other energy company's fixed deals? Is BG the cheapest given your average useage figures, for instance?

PS I have always meant to ask you this but have forgotten in the past, so here goes: Were you paying BGs standard tariff before you took out the 2010 fix?

Well if that wasn’t a rant!!!

Can we just for once have a thread that discusses the merits/demerits of 2 specific tariffs.

You pollute almost every thread on this Board with a diatribe against the Government or British Gas.

However valid your arguments may, or may not, be they usually detract from any measured discussion on Money Saving. There surely are other Boards on MSE and indeed other Forums where you can vent your apparent anger and frustration and allow other people to give their considered views of the merits of fixing or not.

I picked these 2 tariffs because BG still have the most customers by far and the Standard Tariff gets rightly hammered by many people as very expensive and Click 5 praised by many; and that has been the situation for some while.

So as a ‘bad’ tariff set against a ‘good’ tariff it is an excellent example for comparison.

Of course there are tariffs from other companies that can be considered but they are all essentially the same type of gamble. The permutations are endless.

So instead of always playing the Devil’s Advocate and asking other people have they considered this option, or that option, why don’t you work out some figures?

    P.S.
If you want to resurrect the discussion on the BG2010 fix,(that's your style isn't it?) the thread can be found if you do a search and you can add to the thread. You will be able to apply 50/50 hindsight for the last 3 years and add your insight about what will happen between now and April 30 2010 and give us some figures about the wisdom or not of taking the gamble.

No talk of a potential decrease, I see? I was talking of potential decreases 8 days BEFORE this thread was instigated. And I don't claim to be in any way an 'expert' :rotfl:

Question: If the 2011 fix was still available now, would you still consider posting a thread like this again?
