PETS passport - potential border issue

Have recently had a client who returned from Hols in France - does so on a regular basis and takes her 3 dogs with her. At the (routine tick and tapeworm) visit to the Vet in one of the Channel Ports (Cherbourg), during her return trip, the French vet revaccinated her 3 dogs with the standard Lepto,Parvo, Distemper, ICH jabs despite my having done them 3 months before. This was apparently because they were not recorded in the Passport. I would urge all PETS passport holders to be on the lookout for this as it is not a requirement for return. Just make sure your passport contains the information on the annual routine vaccinations - You have been warned. Obviously make sure the Rabies is up to date - I get about 1 a year who has to go through the whole Rabies testing game again because they fail to keep the vaccine up to date.

Are there health implications for the dogs if they are revaccinated? Or is it just a moneymaking exercise for the french vets? Just curious:D

Well spotted - thats what I thought - what a scam. I was quite shocked by the absolute brass of this vet . Fortunately there are no health risks to the dogs, but they did NOT need these vaccinations, being already up to date. This client left the vet with a much larger bill than I would have managed for 3 vaccines, so can only conlcude that this was "profiteering" in the most invidious way.

  • I haven't heard of this but I will check with my clients when they come back. Two today didn't hear this.

I have the vaccinations recorded in the passport now, but they used to be on a seperate card, and my vet told me to take it with me when we travelled. Every French vet I've used has asked to see the vax record. I never thought anything of it before.
When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.
  • I've just had my Lab's Rabies booster, Quantum, and have been told that it is now required in 3 not 2 years. 50% reduction! Hope the vet is right. It is stamped in her passport.

I usually staple the data sheet for the vaccine into the passport and this can then be shown to any interested inspecting vet. 3 years is the normal interval for many of the rabies vaccines used now - In the end it is the signing vet who takes the responsibility of making sure the dates are correct and it is the clients responsibility to make sure they are kept up to date.

  • Hi
Does anybody know what DEFRA say about this - my vet has just told me it needn't be done for another 3 years, but I'm a bit wary about this and the DEFRA regulations which say it should be done annually?

According to my vet, it's 3 years in the UK, but 1 year in most European countries. So 3 years is fine in terms of pet passports, but if it's been more than 1 year, it could potentially cause difficulties if you had a problem abroad, as the dog would not be vaccinated according to their rules. To be on the safe side I've always had my dog revaccinated just before we go away, if it's been more than a year.
