Need some advice please on what Im entitled too??

Options
Hello

I will try to explain clearly as I can as its quite confusing and i apologise in advance for that.

im 30 suffer with severe mental health problems, lupus and rhumatoid athritus. I receive DLA high rate care and low rate mobility. my daughter whos 9 receives middle care and low mobility due to being partially sighted(only 20%vision). My husband receives Carers allowance and doesnt work for looking after me and I get Carers allowance for looking after my daughter. Quite a mess!! Ive been working from home self employed for the past 18months but my illness has got so bad that Im having to stop in january 2005 as i cant cope anymore. A make hardly any profit as I just sell a few bits online each week-secondhand goods of ours etc.
What do I need to do, ive been told by BEL that i can get income support for us all if i stop working, but in what order do I do things and how soon will the income support take to sort out. Currently we receive tax credits which i assume will stop, is there anyway online i can print an income support form, and do i inform tax credits?
sorry but am so confused, i feel awful that im having to do this. my mind is willing but body is not :-/. im in so much pain all the time, i can barely walk etc and need someone with me all the time as I selfharm.
I feel like a scrounger, but cant live this like this anymore :-[
Thank you all so very much

  • Details of how to claim Income Support here
    DWP Income Support

It will be worth your while downloading and completing the form from the website but you may find you have to also complete a form at an interview at the local office. Local Offices tend not to know what is available online and prefer to check that form is completed under their scrutiny. Having a completed form to hand though will ensure you have checked all the necessary information and retain a copy for reference should the claim not go smoothly.

There is a detailed guide to Income Support here IS20 A guide to Income Support This is more detail than you need but may be useful if you don't understand how to work out the "profit" your so-called "business" has made/lost recently.

There is a £20 disregard (see page 108 of the guide) for those on disability premium so you will be able to continue with a certain amount of trading while on IS.

    Hi bottoms,

If you start your own thread I'm sure we'll be able to help. Would it be possible to give more info also please, explaining why they have been told they can't get help?
    Gone ... or have I?
  • Just had a look at the link sent by Ted, although this is one method the quickest would be to call the Contact Centre 0800 055 66 88, they will take all the details over the phone & arrange an appointment at your local Jobcentre to go through the form & discuss what to do next with either looking for work or training if thats what you want to do....if you don't that should be fine for the moment due to your Carers Allowance but I'm sure you see claiming Income Support as a short term measure until you feel well enough to either return to self employment or work for an employer.

Once you've made the appointment you should be contacting Tax Credits letting them know your no longer self employed & claiming benefits instead because Income Support won't pay you if getting Working Tax Credits.

Hope this helps & your health improves soon.

Your advice may help others but I am not sure it will help the OP as this thread is nearly 4 years old.
