Been envious for ages of those able to get organic veg delivered, but finally sourced a supplier who delivers to my area. That day has finally come and now am the proud recipient of a variety of fruit and vegetables, and mighty pleased I am with the quality too.
Being a veggie for more years than I care to remember, thought I would know what everything was. Huh, what a fool am I?
I did guess correctly at the celeriac, think the smell gave it away a bit, but never seen one in the shops round here. Have got some recipes for this, but never had the chance to try them out, so can't wait.
Anyway, got this bag of what I would call curly kale, it looks like kale but isn't green, its sort of very dark purple, verging on black, with red veins, so am I right in assuming that it's another variety of kale? Can't post any piccies sorry, but to me seems to be from the brassica family - definitely not a lettuce variety. At the end of the day, can always cook it as I do for normal kale, but if anyone can help me out, would be extremely grateful.

It sounds like cavalo nero (black kale) which is in season at this time of year. Cook it just like you would any other leafy veg such as spinach, chard, kale etc ... great in stir fries, with pasta, in soups etc"An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will"

Thanks HOLsale, doesn't really look like chard greens, much curlier and to me looks just like green kale, only purply almost black. Wish my camera was working to take a piccy!
Think that it is more like what Curry Queen said - sorry couldn't work out how to do 2nd quote, so copied and pasted!

Have never heard of cavalo nero or black kale, but am sure that is what it is, as looked up a wee picky on the internet. Yummy, I love kale - and it's good for me.
Thank you both, appreciate your time very much0 -
you can always call or email your box scheme and find out for certain...they may even have recipes for it!
east coast organics sent me a brown bag full of green tomatoes last week and stuck a sticker on the bag with two recipes for using them, i thought that was fantasticfounder of Frugal Genius UK (Yahoo Groups)0 -
I always get a note in my box from Butterby's. It tells you the type and variety of each item in the box and the address of the farm where it was grown. There's always a message on the bottom - sometimes about how the business is doing, sometimes it's a veg prep tip, sometimes a recipe etc.
It might be worth suggesting to your box supplier so you know exactly what you've got! Here I go again on my own....0 -
I sometimes have a look at Riverford Organic's site if I'm not sure what to do with a new veggie as they have a great recipe selection on there and add new ones each week"An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will"

Just got my first box today as well, I'm afraid to say I was a little disappointed but maybe I chose the wrong box. I mainly wanted it for the veg but wanted some fruit as well so chose Riverfords Fruit and veg box. Weightwise todays had probably more than 50% fruit. Then for veg it only had brocolli and kale which I'm pleased with, mushrooms which I'm happy with but there didn't seem very many, celery (not keen, what shall we do with this...) and a bag of salad. Then they substitued the aubergine for a squash - oh dear we now have quite a squash collection as I've had three from my parents allotment sitting around for weeks! I think it worked out quite expensive for the amount we recieved.
The veg isn't going to go very far so I'm going to change my order to a larger veg box instead.0 -
Sorry not had time to be on-line over last couple of days, so thanks to all for suggestions. Just to add contents of my box, well sacks actually.
Potatoes 1 kg (normal is 5kg too much for me, so chose to have other veg instead)
2 large leeks,
2 beetroot
1 celeriac
bag of cavalo nero (black kale) - am sure that's what it is
carrots
onions
2 dinky little cauliflours
parsnips
Fruit
Selection of apples, pears and oranges - 9 pieces of fruit in total.
Cost £10 for veggies, £2.50 for fruit.
Also enclosed welcome letter introducing themselves, another order form for organic bread, eggs and milk if required and a newsletter with recipe.
So far made a lovely pot of soup, had to have cauliflour in white sauce which was delicious, and had a little of the kale, but been so busy, not had a chance to give much thought to the rest. Anyway, weekend off now, and up nice and early, so will plan out properly what I can do with the veg that needs to be used soonest. Found a nice recipe for the black kale which involved olive oil and chilli which sounds quite interesting, so might give that a try.0 -
Can anyone racommend a company that delivers to crewe (is there any out there that deliver on a weekend?)

Well, I'm not sure what on earth I was thinking earlier this week (and can't honestly remember the phone call taking my order for this week) but I seem to have landed myself with a family sized organic veg/fruit box
Under normal circumstances it wouldn't matter so much as I'd have found ways to creatively use everything up and/or freeze some of it, but due to me not being well lately I'm barely cooking anything anyway and the freezer is already packed to the ginnels with perishable stuff I've shoved in there to save for later so it doesn't go off
I even had a nightmare last night that I was drowning in a sea of veggies ... but that's what it feels like right now"An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will"
