16 year old, working rights.

My daughter has been working part time since she was 15 at a local nationwide bakery. she does around 15 hours per week.

She is now 16 and her college course begins next week starting with a 3 day induction course. The problem is, when she went for her enrollment this week she was told she has to go back the following week (27th, 28th and 29th Aug) for a 3 day induction.

obviously working part time her rota is done around a week or 2 in advance and she was down to work those days. She has been told by her manager that if she does not work those days she will be sacked. So basically its her induction days or work.

This is the only source of income my daughter gets apart from a little pocket money, so she really could do without the hassel of being told if she does not turn up she wil get the boot.

WHere do 16 years olds stand, what rights if any do they have, and can she get the sack if she attends the induction days ather than go in to work.

If she has a clean disciplinary record, I wouldn't have thought they would sack her for it. Obviously the College induction is more important than a part time job, but the college should really be giving reasonable notice in this case - surely they know a year in advance when their inductions are! Get them to reschedule their induction or do a special one when your daughter is available.

Thanks for that, but it hasn't answered my question regarding rights.

The rights she has are the same as any other worker. They would be unlikely to sack her, as already stated, if she has a clean disciplinary record. They have to follow the same disciplinary proceddure as with any other worker, be they older, younger, black, white, male, female, gay, straight, christian, muslim or whatever. The fact she is a 16 year old female is irrelevant. Is she in the union?

no, never thought about joining a union at her age, at the end of the day its only a part time job and she is a minor really.

But now i know her rights we can take any action if the worst happens. Thanks very much

You can't expect a college to have a special induction just for one student because they have a part time job. What happens if she has lectures on a day she is supposed to work.

Like I said, surely the college knows what it is doing more than two weeks in advance?

the induction 3 days are for all the class, there are lots of things they will be doing, so i doubt a one to one will be offered.

it doesnt matter, as now i know my daughter has rights we can go down that route if need be.

Can any one advise who we could speak to if she does lose her job, Citizans Advice maybe.

i imagine they did, but we were not informed until the day she enrolled.

There are lots of things we had to find out our selves such a Bus travel etc, they did not inform us as about that neither, we were a week to long on closing date to apply for that, she will have to travel 21 miles each day on public bus.

It is a nightmare that you have to drag information out of public bodies all the time. The same with doctors / hospitals / tax people. They assume you know how everything works - only the people that use these facilities all the time know how they work - newbies do not have a clue, and do not know where to obtain this sort of information either.

Why don't you get her to blame you, IYKWIM

Just tell her to tell her job that "my mum says I'm doing the induction, end of".

They might see she is backed into a corner & has no choice.

I wouldn't actually contact them yourself, but if she says her mum has said she has to take the days off to do it, they might see shes just a young girl who has to do what shes told & feel a bit sorry for her & cut her some slack.
