What is our ceiling made of?

Options
We're getting our ceiling plastered, and I've just had a quick go at trying to strip the wallpaper off (looks like woodchip) and I can't seem to get to a solid base.

In the photo, the inner grey bit is what's like a plaster, but it's really soft, like chalk and seems impossible to strip the wallpaper from it.

Any ideas what it is and what I should do?

is it just in one small patch? Maybe it's just a bad DIY job in that area, where the previous owners filled a hole with plaster.

has someone just put woodchip paper over bare plaster board, and now that you have wet and gouged into it, you are getting the chalky inner layer?

This was my thought, but I don't know what plaster board looks like. I thought it was white.

I had a fear that it might be asbestos, as I hear that old ceilings can have that in?

I had planned on getting a steamer to strip the ceiling. Do you think it would be worth it? I assume you can't skim over wallpaper?

Bonbon, I came across a nail head, so I don't think it's a hole. I guess the nail head would point to plaster board. It seems really thin.

It does seem that it's most likely to be plaster board. I'm queen of the bodgers when it comes to DIY, but I wouldn't skim over the paper. If anything happens to the paper, like it rots or gets damp under the plaster the whole thing might start to crack or fall down.

OK, so how will I remove the paper? The scraper is just scratching the plasterboard. I think a steamer would be worth the money, it's a 22 x 12ft ceiling I have to strip :s

you can purchase a steamer for about £25, just be careful when it drips on you cos its damm hot!

Looks to me like they have papered straight on to the plasterboard - plasterboard has usually got a grey coated paper layer with white plaster underneath.

I cant really make out what it is, but is the grey bit like plain paper as its coming off?

If it is, its plasterboard, where they havent skimmed it, or even sealed it prior to papering, if it is, even with a steamer your going to have a nightmare getting it off.

If it is bare plasterboard, you will tell when you carry on stripping, as the ' grey paper' bit will rip and tear under the woodchip as your stripping.

the grey is the plaster in the middle of plaster board, seems like you have gone just a little to deep and taken of the outer layers of the plaster board, not a prob this will give you a guide as to how many layers you need to take off.

I'd re-sheet the ceiling with new plasterboard over the top of all that (or get someone to do it for you. Cheap, much less hassle and simple to cut with a stanley knife and screw up onto joists. Then either tape and fill the joins or plaster over.

    Thanks for the replies everyone.

The grey bit has dried white this morning. So I suppose I've gone through the covering of the plasterboard.

We really need to start saving money so I'm determined to have a go at this myself. I've got time as the electrics still need to be done before we plaster. And the electricians so far say that they can't do the electrics till end of September.

At least I know it's nothing dangerous.

What's the worst that can happen? I'll ruin the plaster board and we'll have to reboard anyway? I can live with that.
