Cardiff - Grimsby trains

Anyone travelled from Cardiff to Grimsby and know of a good way of breaking up the journey to pay less? Not going until December, but want to book exactly 12 weeks prior if I can.

Thanks

    Cardiff to Birmingham advance single
    Brirmingham to Nottingham advance single
Nottingham to Grimsby cheap day single via Lincoln Central (if you don't specify this the journey planners will send you on a slightly quicker longer route with no cheap fares)

is one possibility. The cheap day single can be bought on the day, the others in advance.

You might also look at Cardiff - London, London - Grimsby

Booking exactly 12 weeks in advance is generally NOT a good idea. You can easily land up paying full fare. The cheap advance tickets are rarely if ever released at this stage - it's usually later, often much later.

Never thought of via London. I could try a coach (Megabus or National Express - got £1 each way before now on these both!) Thank you.

I think Birmingham new street -> Leeds is the cheapest leg of a train journey from leeds to newport if that helps. Think it's sometimes £15 single if booked in advance.

From my experience booking 12 weeks in advance is a BAD idea - trains don't work like airlines. I'm looking for tickets to London in October. Cheapest with a 12 week window was £80 each way, which for two soon stacks up.

Out of interest I looked for prices in September and it was £22 each way, so I'm holding off.
