so have mine i think it could be where the flowers have gone to seed had a poke around and there are small pots underneath not bad for old sprouting potatoes i just chucked in the garden will dig a plant up tomorrow and see whats underneath so chuffed first time i have grown potatoes
  • It's the fruits of the potato plant. Tomatos and potatos are related, they both belong the family Solanaceae. There are varities of Tomato that have potato shaped leaves...

Unlike tomatos you can't eat the fruits of the potato however, they're poisonous.

Thanks - I found the same in my garden, and thought the people at the back were taking the !!!! and throwing things over the fence again. Either that or I'd planted tomatos by mistake.
(So why is the fruit of a potato not a potato?)
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

(So why is the fruit of a potato not a potato?)

When it was explained to me as a child what was and wasn't a fruit in the botany sense it was explained that anything that had a seed or seeds was a fruit.

So a potato is not a fruit because it doesn't contain seeds there as a cucumber, a banana and a tomato are fruits because they contain seeds. We then had to do an experiment where we cut various bits of fruit and veg into pieces to find the seeds. :D
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

  • Like Blackjack Davy says don't be tempted to eat them! They are part of the deadly nightshade family as tomatos, aubergines and peppers. Some members are poisonious, some are not and some have both poisionous and edible parts (like the potato).

Wonder who first found out which ones were and weren't deadly. :s
