My assistant (and friend) at work whom I rescued from e-on about six months ago was given an electricity meter whilst she was working there. Having never used it because it was so complicated I got it out of the box and had a play.

I've worked out that my fridge and freezer burn about £227 a year in total

Is that normal?

I assume you've looked at the meter when the compressor was running and it's not a running total meter just a live view of what it's using at that particular time.

Best bet is to sit in front of it for 24 hours and take a reading each minute ;)

Checking mine now Tim...using the famous Lidl monitor...overnight 8hr period used £0.028p, which equates to just under £31 a year.
    Rated at 292kwh. Fridge/Freezer.

Assuming it was one of the Owl/Electrisave monitors that EON hand out, the OP's post demonstrates why these 'energy monitors' are useless for the majority of the appliances that use most of our electricity.

Had the OP used the monitor when the compressor was not running(the majority of the time) he would have concluded that his fridge freezer would cost exactly nothing(£0.00p) per year to run.

Lucky he didn't try it on an immersion heater or it would have shown that they cost £3,000 a year to run, or nothing.

Using my lidl monitor over the whole of last month, my hotpoint fridge freezer should use approx 451 units pa which is roughly what it should use.

    I have E10 so on a 60 / 40 split, I recon it costs approx £39pa.
