Im looking for a mobile phone for my dad. Hes not much into technology and only wants a phone to make and receive calls. He says a cheap one will do.

I would very much appreciate if people could post the cheapest ones you can find on the web here.

    See this thread http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=53624

Although the offer ended end of September it's still active, you can add
a Nokia 1100 for £26.99 with £25 total airtime to the basket.

Don't know if it will still let you complete the purchase.

Well I'd say definitely go for the Siemens A65 - brilliant. No BT, but its a lovely little colour model, with easy functionality and best of all its tri-band. All for £1.99!! Yes, yes, I know the link has been posted here loads and loads of times, but try to find the one for Virgin Lifestyle Rewards. They list it at £26.99, but you get £25 credit included, so the phone actually costs you £1.99.

So there you go, I would highly rec it for anyone who doesn't want/need BT or a camera (camera attachment available to buy also). They were really cool and helpful over there at Virgin, and I ordered it on Tuesday and it arrived (free p+p) on Wednesday afternoon (less than 24 hours to be exact).

Before all the naysayers diss the phone, I would say, I have a K750i, lost a K700i and have a T610 (amongst many other handsets), so I'm not saying this phone is comparable, but I work free-lance and am always having to make calls in the daytime to all sorts of numbers. As I drive, its still handy as it comes with an earpiece, and its small, light and unobtrusive. Best of all, I can talk and text away to my hearts content, use up my £25 credit and still have a brand new, decent tri-band colour mobile at the end of it for £1.99. Will definitely be using it as my 'holiday phone' until I source another bargain. Would be nice if I could take videos and pics with it on holiday, but until I get my waterproof digital camera, will use Zire71 for pics and Siemens for calls. (Really CANNOT lose the K750i).

And finally, really this time, Virgin uses the T-Mobile network (network coverage/accessibility) and they're usually quite agreeable I understand, if you need your PAC code to port your number (certain spend probably required).

Overall, my best buy so far this month. £1.99!

Don't know what age group your Dad is and what he will find easy to use etc? Before I bought my Mother a flip phone (she is 77 and not technically minded) mother constantly failed to terminate calls by not pressing the red button on her old Nokia to end calls, also refused to use keylock as she said is was too complicated to put on and off so the consequence was phone calls made accidentally when she nudged the green button on the phone which then dialled up the previously dialled call. With the amount of money on top ups she was getting through I thought she had been on chat lines!
I would check out a reconditioned flip phone from the o2 or Virgin website, make sure you know how the coverage is where your Dad will use the phone as most phones are sim locked and other than Nokias not that easy to unlock, i.e. no point in buying from Virgin if the T Mobile/Virgin signal is poor, same goes for o2 of course.
