Where to eat in Southapton

Never been to Southampton but are staying there for a night before a cruise.
Staying at the Holiday Inn Express.
Can anyone suggest a pleasant restaurant to eat, not too expensive and not a greasy spoon.

I always stay in the De Vere Grand Habour before going on a cruise, slightly more expensive than a Holiday Inn but really gets you in the mood for the cruise - especially being so close to the harbour!

I tend to eat out rather than use the hotel's restaurant. TGI Friday's is normally the one we opt for.

Not sure what sort of thing you like but there's a fairly new Japanese restaurant called Zen which is excellent.
If you like Chinese then I'd recommend Pilgrim House.

There's also an ASK and Frankie and Benny's if you like Italian - they're both in the LeisureWorld complex, but there's also a lovely little Italian restaurant in the town centre next to the Tourist Information called the Tavernetta - I've only eaten there once but it was really good and not too pricey.

    Have fun!!

The Piccollo Mondo - it's a bit hidden away, but has been there for years - it's gorgeous, fresh, Italian food & really well priced.
The easiest way I can think of explaining how to get there is that it is at the back entrance of Matalan, which is in the Marlands shopping centre ( the smaller shopping centre of the 2 ) or, if you are crossing over from Asda, follow the pavement around, with the guildhall on your left it is a tiny - skinny restaurant accross the road from Matalan, near a camera shop. Usually 4 of us 2 adults & 2 children can eat very well for just over £20 with a couple of drinks.

I second Zen if you like Japanese food and if you have never had it before then try it, it's not all sushi

TGI Fridays is an easy option and easy to find

there is also a new wagamamas there if you like noodles

Personally i would steer clear of Zen although the food is good as is the sushi it can be quite expensive and sometimes i have found them to be rude.

Tgi fridays or frankie and bennys as suggested above is a good option if thats what you are looking for.

There ia also La Margherita down next to the ferry terminal, its within walking distance of about 5-10mins, not cheap but great food.

If you dont mind getting a taxi there is a new resturant called 90 degrees at carltons, run by the same people as margerita, also good food. If you go try the sticky toffee pudding, amazing and the Goats cheese risotto.

Oxford street is just round the corner from where you are also and there are quite a few restuarants there. Charlie Chans Chinese is nice, there a pizza express which is good and kutis indian restaurant is nice.

Do not go to Radleys in oxford street, nice food but major price tag and pretenious prices!

    Hope this helps.

I agree that Zen is really good.

If you like Indian then Kutis in Oxford Street is fantastic. Also Oxfords in Oxford Street is great for brasserie style food.

    The Piccollo Mondo

Thanks kizzykizzywizzy, it looked a bit empty when we got there, not flash, more a nice Italian type Cafe.
Heard the garlic bread was supposed to be good. GOOD it was amazing, huge portion, two was too much for 6 of us, full of garlic, wow.
The main course again were huge portions, freshly cooked and tasted wonderful.
If you go do not be put off by the looks, lovely atmosphere inside and the food is great (not the soup). If you like it TRY THE GARLIC BREAD.
