Is it worth getting a new psu?
how much will it cost including fitting as I dont think I could tackle it myself.
Someone gave me a link to ebuyer and they cost from 20-70 pound. when I looked in the back of the pc I think it said 350w, does that sound right, the pc is dell 5150 and is 2 yrs oldNice to save.0 -
First thing I would do is to remove everything on your computer one by one and reseat it all back you may just have a bad connection somewhere.
That is what it said to do in the that link I posted, OK you may not be up to that but do you know anyone else who could help you.
As for power supply be carefull as some manufactures have thier own connectors and they would not fit on generic equipment, I can't remember who it was but someone else may know and post it. If you do buy a new power supply get at least 450 Watt and a good named make, when I changed mine a few years back it made my whole system faster, I was most surprised.
It sounds like a bad/poor connection to me and by removing the device/plug it may make the connection good again and at very little cost.
All those wires do look scary to someone who has never built a PC but it's not really that bad if you take your time, write down and mark each lead as you remove them and take photographs to aid memory should you forget where one went, but with most its just remove it and put it straight back, the only hard ones will be the plugs on the motherboard as access is sometimes restricted.
AND MAKE SURE THE POWER IS OFF0 -
Have you seen this Dell page?
Diagnostic Lights
Seems to be a common problem.Im pretty sure Dell power supplies are not standard and have different pin outs. I think you will need to replace with the correct part - not an off the shelf one.

I'd also draw attention to what the OP said earlier about the flashing light being near the ethernet cable.
Those above links refer to the power light which is on the front.0 -
The pc is dell, there is a flashing orange light in the back of the pc it is behind where the ethernet cable is attached. It stays on and flashes even when i switch off at the plug....does this sound like the powerpack
I just assumed that was the data traffic light for the ethernet connection and nothing to do with fault diagnoses.0 -
Hi Thanks all for replies
I am getting a tad confused though
the flashing amber light I am referring to is the acutal button to switch on the pc
As it stands at the moment I am very reluctant to switch off the pc incase it wont switch on again!!!!!Nice to save.0 -
Is the date and time correct? BIOS battery may need replacing. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

I would assume the dignostic lights will be inside the case somewhere.
I assumed wrongly:
To help you troubleshoot a problem, your computer has four lights labeled "A," "B," "C," and "D" on the back panel.
http://docs.us.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/opgx270/en/ug/solve.htm#1235408
Start by seeing what the lights are now and when fault occurs and print out the list in the link above for reference.
Then report back here what the result is.
If it's working normally you should have 4 green lights.0 -
hi brit brat
thanks for all your advice so far
Just one or two questions, the link you sent talked about four diagnostic lights on the back of the pc........i dont see them, will they be inside the casing? This morning I have the same probelm, flashing amber light and unable to power up the pc,
The pc is dell model 5150 2yr old
When you say disconnect and reconnect everything do you mean all the wires and cards inside the casing in the back of the pc, the other thing I did notice when i looked in the casing yesterday was a lot of dust....could this cause a problem??? and how should i clean itNice to save.0
