My lightbulb moment: Summer 2004.
Debts at their highest: 7,000
Debt free date: June 2007 :j
My pearl of wisdom: I have a few:
1, if you cannot afford to pay your bills each month do something about it before it's too late, you'll be amazed how accomodating credit card companies can be.
2.pay off your most expensive interest rate first or transfer to a 0% interest card.
3, Don't try and save money pay off the debt first because it's way more expensive to have debt.
4, I chose to consolidate all my debt into a flexible loan it's a non homeowners personal loan and it allows you to pay off as much of the amount as possible each month without incurring a penalty, BUT BE WARNED IT ALSO HAS A FLEXIBLE APR  ,so it started off really low at 5.8% and gradually rose each year but then the APR skyrocketed to 19.9% so I would if you want to do it that way pay it off pretty quick so not to endure such high intesrest rates luckliy I had payed the loan off just before this happened.
And finally my partner is also debt free that includes his morgage which he payed off last year, he off set his morgage a couple of years a go and lived like a pauper for 10 months and payed every little bit of money he earnt into his morgage he is 38 and I am 35 and we both have absolutely no debts and we continue to save as much money we can. Thanks martin :money:0 -
My final loan repayment went out on Friday and I'm now 100% totally debt free! The noose has now been loosened and savings for the future can now be planned.
Unfortunately, I'm also in the process of going through a redundancy period at work (after 13 years) and will use the redundancy money in several ways. Have decided to put a couple of thousand in Premium Bonds, some in an ISA and use another couple of thousand to go to Uganda for 3 months to work with kids suffering from, or affected by, HIV/AIDS. Having never been out of work before, I thought I may never get the opportunity to do this again, and it's something to look back on and hopefully feel that I've made a positive change to some peoples lives. This is something seriously lacking in my current job.
Anyway, debt free at last! WooHoo!

My pearl of wisdom: educate your kids to be DFW's
My LBM was June 2004, when I had to take a 2nd job to feed us when my ex stopped paying maintenance - suddenly I wasn't keeping our heads above water.
I have to add that £4,500 of my debt was paid off by my inheritance whem my Mum died in 2005. Not the nicest way to clear debts, I'd rather have my mum0 -
Lightbulb Moment : August 2003. 5 months after buying my new house and realising that I couldn't pay any bills of buy any food that month
Debts at highest : Well I'm sure they weren't higher than £23,000 but Baines & Earnst had me at £350/month for 4 years but I still had £19,000 left to pay at the start of this month which would mean it was about £35,000
Debt Free Date : Friday 23rd Aug 2007 when I make the final payment
Pear of Wisdom : Don't panic. And Do not under any circumstances use Baines & Earnst
Oh, I do still have a mortgage though. I was lucky that my Father helped bail me out. He now owns 20% of my house but I'm £350 better off each month after bills! My wife & I may even have our first holiday in 5 years and the rest is going towards paying the mortgage off early0 -

This post is for my sister who i am so proud of!
Light bulb moment : February 1998 when partner left her after racking up debts of £9000 in her name! Flat was about to be repossessed (fortunately she had bought this before meeting him so it was still in her name) and he didnt want to be dragged down by the courts.
Debt free date: June 2005
Contacted all creditors and agreed what she could realistically pay back monthy
pearl of wisdom:
Be prepared for the long haul..its worth it!
My sister bought her own house last year (cheap and rundown). Has slowly rennovated herself when she has had the money for materials.
She moves in next week!
We have booked mini cruise in June (paid for in cash!)0 -
