Darning Tips

I find that darning things like socks usually isn't worth the bother, as once they get holes they're pretty much falling apart anyway. What I do is just sew up the holes instead - gives them months of extra life with just a few minutes effort.

It's also worth doubling the thread up to make it stronger.

If you have an old jumper etc that is too worn to wear, you can unravel the wool for mending.

I know it sounds like something a mad old biddie would do (I'm a 33 year old man) but I find it relaxing while listening to the radio...perhaps I should get out more! ::)

    Lol Austin,

Can I send you some of my socks? To help you relax, of course......nothing to do with the fact that I never seem to get around to doing it myself! ;)

I sew up the holes in socks, too... but so does my 18 year old son - and he's always out!

I've got one of those wooden 'mushrooms'
My dad had a much loved jumper my mum made him, it must have been about 15 years old, he used to sit there in the evening darning it to the point there must have been more darn than jumper! He called it his DARNED jumper ;D
Can you still buy little cards of darning wool? I have a fine lambswool jumper that needs darning.

You can buy little cards of wool in Woolies - they're about 60p or so. But I don't believe they are pure wool so might not be ideal for your lambswool jumper (eg when you wash it, the darning thread might shrink more or less than the jumper and tear a bigger hole - I learned that concept from the bible, at least it taught me something :-[)

I'm intending to go to a department store at lunch today to look at their wool and haberdashery, I'll try to remember to look for the darning thread there and see if they do a better selection.

I've always wanted to know how to darn, I think it would be a usefull skill but even my mum who is a sewing wizz hasn't done it for so many years that she can't remember in order to teach me. Is there anyone who is planning on going to the old style gathering who woudl be willing to show me the basics if I bring along a clean ( ;D) sock to practise on?
