Collar and cuff dirt

Does anyone know of a (preferably frugal) way of blitzing collar and cuff dirt?
Most tip sites recommend rubbing shampoo into the stains before washing.
I've tried this and although it works slightly, my shirts still come out with a grey ring round the cuffs.
What did people do 'back in the day' about this? I suspect they boiled shirts, is this right? Would this completely destroy a modern shirt?

I use old fashioned laundry soap rubbed into damp collar/cuffs and then a long hot wash. Co-op sell it with the washing powders for about 80p and you get two big bars.
If I have a 'lite' load (not very often ;D) I grate some soap into the tub and skip using washing powder. I have a top-loader though so excess suds is not a porblem for meLife's a beach! Take your shoes off and feel the sand between your toes.0 -
I rub borax solution into them, leave a while and wash at hottest setting they can take.

Thanks. It's probably been asked before, but where can I buy borax? Is it the same as soda crystals?
What solution is best for the collar and cuffs?0 -
I get borax in Boots...£2.10 for a 750g box.

I use fairy household soap, is green, and just rub on and leave then wash as usual.

Pink winged, I tried getting Borax in Boots just now, and the assistant didn't have a clue what I was on about and tried to sell me surgical spirit!
A search for borax on the Boots website also drew a blank! ???0 -
Can't for the life of me remember what it was near, but I have a feeling it was with other detergents.
I'll probably be in Boots later, I'll have a quick look to see whereabouts it is in mine.

I've tried to get Borax for a few months and can't get hold of it. My local Boots doesn't stock it. I've found a local chemist that will order it for me but the price was astronomical >:(Life's a beach! Take your shoes off and feel the sand between your toes.0

I got the idea of using shampoo from"the queen of clean" book, but after I have rubbed collar and cuffs with soap - I then use dregs of shampoo and it works fairly well."This site is addictive!"
