How can I cover a bottle top?

I buy the 500ml bottles of white vinegar and these come in a clear glass jar. It occurred to me that these would be ideal to refill with HM bathroom or food gifts - once I've completely eradicated the vinegar smell. My problem is the white plastic lid has the best before date stamped on it - this is the same on all the vinegar bottles. Does anyone have any ideas how I can cover this - it still needs to screw on. The best I can come up with is a small sticker with some clear nail varnish for extra cover. I'm not sure how hard wearing this would be bearing in mind it will get the most handling. Anybody got any better ideas - or know where I can get lids from (cheaply of course!!!) thanks. Misty

  • How about a can of gold spray paint? This is useful for so many things Xmas time. Just spray the lids-should cover well on plastic. You could use any type of enamel paint otherwise-humbrol from a craft shop-car touch up paint-hope this solves your problem.

  • have you tried to bleach the date off? or maybe nail polish remover would shift it

Yes, anything that will remove ink should help :)

Thanks for the suggestions. I hadn't actually thought of getting it off more for covering it up but will try the bleach. I have got some spray paint too, so that's worth a try. That could work on the Sharwood's bottle lid too - if I can get the red dye out of lid (that'll teach me to buy jars). I had what I thought was a brilliant idea - to buy the bottle stoppers for wine although can't remember how much they cost. Unfortunately, although it goes in, it doesn't fasten flush to the jar and is too jiggly! Will get to work with bleach later. thanks for ideas

how about using a cork to seal the bottle.

or try putting the cap into the washer inside an old sock to see if the ink comes off.

or maybe try another lid from a pop bottle to see if it fits as im sure they are around the same width.

or maybe try scrubbing it with a green pan scrub.

As a practical experiment, not having any WD40, I just dipped a finger in some ordinary cooking oil and gave the cap a rub. Took less than a minute to get all the ink off.

    :)

I actually used a knife to scratch it off - it went a bit grey (black writing on white cap) but a bit of washing up liquid and gone. Thanks for all the replies. I may still spray paint for Xmas but am pleased as the white vinegar bottles are a good size. If you can't find the answer on MSE then it's probably not worth knowing.

How about cutting a small paper motif from magazine etc and sticking that over date - then paint over with clear nail varnish so it looks "meant".
