Budgeting crisis - DH going on strike!

Sorry if this is on the wrong board.....I'd like to think we're fairly good at budgeting, but this month (August) we've not been so great. My challenge for september - In the next week or so it's looking very likely DH is going on strike action at work - so our income is going to be reduced by about £125 a week - leaving us just enough to pay for the mortgage as long as he gets strike money....it's freaking me out that I know we've got bills that need paying, gas and electricity that neds to be put in the pre-paid meter, and get decent meals on the table. Our freezer is fairly full, but would love to have input on how we can cope on £40 a week all in. I've been spending about £30pw on shopping, at lidls and usually another supermaket, we don't buy prepacked ready meals, all food including bread is made at home, make all our cleaning supplies....we've also got DS 3rd birthday in the first week of Sept that we haven't bought anything for...I'm thinking a pair of shoes from Startrite's factory shop (around £12) but would welcome suggestions...we're a family of two adults, one child and I'm expecting a baby in Feb...

To be honest you can't do better than look at the store cupboard challenge, it's amazing how many meals you can concoct out of thin air almost.
Good luck, my dh has just taken a new job with a huge paycut. I've just taken a look at the bank account and wished I hadn'tOrganised people are just too lazy to look for things

You need to take a look at the Benefits Board too, there may be things you can claim for while your OH is not working.
Other than that there are plenty of cheap and cheerful recipes in our collections, loads of ideas for leftovers, and lots of hints on padding out meals as well.
Hints on cleaning products that cost only pennies are kept in our collections along with all sorts of tips.
Take a look at our Welcome sticky and the Cooking and Cleaning sections of the MEGA Index sticky at the top of the forum listing which will give you loads of ideas, and to browse our collections by using our "Indexed Collections" sticky at the top of the forum listing, or you can follow the clue in my signature any time you see it or...
..you can use the Indexed Collections link in the Blue Bar at the top of every page which looks something like this:-Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. Hi
You seem to have done well cutting back etc already :T
Little things I would do is stretch your meals as best as possible-maybe add a tin of cheapie beans (12p)to shepards pie, spag bol, chilli or curry etc-should be able to squeeze maybe lunch the next day too. When cooking a chicken use the breast/best meat for a roast, then next day use the leg/wing meat to make up a curry or pasta meal. Sausages are quite cheap and you can have these with mash/veg/beans or a cassarole, toad in hole. Good old fashioned egg & HM chips & loads of bread and butter.
If you have car/home/life insurance-try and get cheaper quotes. Im sure youve probably looked at everything else, but normal things would be home phone, mobile, sky, petrol?? Do you run more than 1 car? Do you need to be on prepayment meters? They are dearer to run.
Im in a similar position this month regarding money being very tight-have just realised that we have £170 to find for car tax at the end of the month and have another £250 to find for a misc bill I had forgotten about  I have looked at my quicken money spreadsheet and will have to use some of my savings from my conservatory funds whch ive been saving from cutting back on food/petrol but still need to find £275.00  Its gonna be tight but am determind to do it. I will be stretching my meals this month..lol.
I wish you and family well and i am thinking about you :grouphug:
