3G USB modem

I see 3G are doing pay-as-you-go USB modem, and I am off to Aviemore soon and want to keep in touch with MSE.

Anyone got any experience of these devices?

I have not yet but am on the verge of committing myself due to working all over UK some weeks. You have to weigh up whether you are a casual user or hammer the connection.

If your a light user as in browse web and download very little then the 3gig £15 package would suit you perfectly. However be careful as in those remote areas even if you are lucky to get a signal you will be on gprs which is very slow.

Thanks for the info, might get one with the fifteen quid PAYG deal and see how it goes, Aviemore has no mcDonalds to park in for the free wifi option - McDonalds and the McDonalds dont exactly see eye to eye up there.

Bloody great in a 3G area. Installation is idiot proof. THey do have an IP pool where you connect and get web browsing but nowt else so if you find that you can't sign into MSN or use Usenet etc, disconnect, wait a few seconds and reconnect.

Oh, and I managed to get it working in Linux quite easily too thanks to Vodafone who released a Linux app and all you need to do is create a profile and stick the 3 UK user/pass and APN in. It's sad that where I live, in a 2G only area, the Linux client connects better than the Windows one but there you go.

Scrungebucket, I've tried it in a few areas of England and it works great but aint been to Scotland yet. Have you checked out the coverage area on the 3 website? A thouht strikes me that you have 2 weeks to cancel the deal providing you aint used the modem for three days so if you were in Scotland for less than that and there were problems presumably the modem could be returned and any contracts cancelled.

T-mobile have a real pay as you go deal - £100 the 3g modem then £4 for any one day's use, no rental. Instant messaging is permitted. Suits the occasional traveller.

I bought the 3 PAYG modem a few weeks ago, heavy browsing most days for 2 weeks used about 1GB. The modem uses HSDPA so theoretically you should get up to 2.8mbps, Ive found it less than half, around 1mb though adequate but this will depend on the area. I'm not sure if the latency or low upload capacity would affect games, peer to peer is probably not a good idea for larger files.

The PAYG factor is great if your not a heavy bandwidth user as you can just buy top-ups in the shops and theres no minimum contract. The installation program is stored in the modem so you can plug it into any computer with USB and use it instantly.

    Regarding using it in Linux...

    Download and install from here:
    https://forge.vodafonebetavine.net/frs/?group_id=12&release_id=9

It'll create a "Vodafone Connect" menu entry. (In "Internet" on Ubuntu)

Run the application and create a new profile. In the username and password boxes enter:

    three

    In the APN box enter:

    three.co.uk

Does your £10 or £15 of 3 Credit have to used within a certain period of time to prevent it from expiring?
