Rice in slow cooker

Rice (slow) cookers - any good?

I've already got a MR slow cooker which i use all the time. Just wondering whether to buy a rice/pasta cooker or whether to stick with my pan & oven.

P.S. when cooking rice i tend to follow curry_queens pilau rice recipe from the thread on this site.

I have a rice cooker..... i had it bought for me. I do use it however it doesnt make things any easier/quicker in my opinion. It isnt something i would of gone out and bought myself :)
  • I have a rice cooker and tend to use Lidl boil in the bag rice. Much easier :D Moneysaving as the rice cooker was a gift, so no outlay for it .

I have tried three rice cookers and each one cooked so fast the water disappeared before the rice was cooked and it burnt.
  • I have a Tefal rice cooker (£19.99 from RobertDyas and you can use the 10% off code from the vouchers board AND use the link on rpoints, or you could buy instore without those benefits but not have to pay P&P).

Anyway, I have been using rice cookers for years. The type of rice I use is "basmati"/"basmathi". I have always found that the correct ratio of water to rice to use (at least for the type of rice I use) is 1.5 cups of water for each cup of rice. Don't go by the water levels shown on the inside of the rice cooker bowl otherwise you will have the problem Bossyboots has with the water disappearing before the rice is cooked. This applies to my Tefal rice cooker and to my previous Kenwood rice cooker. Also, remember to NEVER use an abrasive pad to clean the bowl otherwise the rice will stick in future. That's what happened to my Kenwood. Someone very kindly helped with the washing up one day and after that the rice always stuck  (happened to my mother's previous rice cooker as well when a guest made the same mistake when trying to help).

thanks for the comments guys. As i;d be buying the rice cooker rather than getting as a gift, i think i'll be sticking with my pan and cooker.

I always cook rice in a microwave rice cooker. It gives consistently good results and is very easy to use. They are about £7 and I have never had a failure in about 10 years of using.
  • I have a Tefal 3 in 1 rice cooker/slow cooker/ steamer with a non-stick interior which means I have 3 gadgets but only need room for 1. I must admit getting the water: rice ratio is a bit tricky - some trial and error required. We bought ours from Costco for around £30 from recollection. Available from Amazon for £44.97 - worth considering if you were thinking of getting a slow cooker anyway?

We started using one of these recently whenever we only need to make a small amount of rice. It works well. For larger quantities we still use our rice cooker.
  • Hi all,

Had amazing success with whole chicken in slow cooker last week so am inspired to try out more things in it. Giving jacket potates a whirl tomorrow but was wondering if there was any way to do rice in it at all? I do a baked rice dish in the oven quite often and also boiled/steamed rice on the hob and I wonder if they can be adapted for a slow cooker?

Any expert views/ideas would be great!

    Many thanks
