They are funky but nicotine stained!!!!

Went to two different charity shops today. In the first I got a proper pizza dish, unused and still boxed for £1.50 (result).
In the second shop, I got the most funky, bizarre set of weighing scales, so obviously from the seventies and at a pound were an unusual looking bargain.
Of course there has to be a downside. They have been nicotine stained and it is the kind of stained plastic you see at boot sales, on computers, phones, old portable tvs etc.
Any suggestions?? Without they nic stains they would look good enough to go on a worktop.

Hot vinegar and water solution or lemon juice should clean it.
It worked on my microwave.:j"This site is addictive!"

Im going to try the two last suggestions, have tried the previous to no avail
.
Trouble is I cannot actually soak the bottom part of scales as I could mess up the mechanism. Will try soap powder on the bowl for it though. Its been soaking in bleach for hours but no use Im afraidGrocery Challenge £139/240 until 31/01

I have just bought 4 new dining chairs from the recycling centre but they stink of nicotine, Have been scrubbing them all morning with sugar soap solution but the wood still stinks. Am planning to steam clean the seat pads.
Any other suggestions? Eventually I will sand them down and paint and recover them but I know that the kids and OH will notice the smell the minute they walk in the door tonight. Don't want the moaning from OH about buying second hand stinky furniture. HELP!0 -
I suspect you've misidentified the discolouration. While it might be the same colour as cigarette tar stains, like those commonly found on the ceiling above where people often smoke, your plastic has probably changed colour from UV catalysed oxidation of the brominated flame retardants which are added to plastics.
Cigarette tar will just wash off plastics (maybe with a little help from a cream cleaner that says suitable for plastics on it), which is how you quickly tell the difference.
If this is the case, nothing will clean it off, it's not dirt, it's a coloured molecule inside the plastic. You'll need to try some kind of chemistry to change the coloured molecules now present in to something without colour. Maybe soaking in a hydrogen peroxide solution? It could take a while though.0 -
Um! it clearly states the chairs are wood Ben.
Mumoftwo, sorry can't help but I am sure someone will be able to.BSCno.87The only stupid question is an unasked oneLoving life as a Kernow Hippy0 -
sorry Ben, you answered the original problem from 2005 about the plastic. My query is about the dining room chairs I bought.
I done a search to see if there was already a thread about nicotine stain removal and found this one, so just added my own problem.
It was definately nicotine stains as the sponge and the water were pure brown and the smell is that of a smokers home!
I have scrubbed and steam cleaned and fabrezed, as predicted, the Oh and kids noticed it straight away. I will keep going over it until I can sand and shabby chic the chairs.0 -
Tigerfeet, I think Ben was replying to the OP.
Have you tried a wash with a bucket of warm water with 1 cup of bleach, and 1-2 cups of floor cleaner (A nice scented one, I get one that comes in a see through bottle and is bright pink) Then a generous sprizt of Febreeze or polish if it's just short term.Bump due 22nd September0
