My dishwasher went crazy bonkers!

My dw is about two months old and I love it. I was using dw tablets, and powder but read on here you could use the cheap soap powder. I have been doing this, no problem. I thought it even worked better than the proper dw powder.
Anyway, a couple of tea mugs were a bit stained, so I thought I would use a dw tablet to give a good blitz. Also into the dw went an old non stick pan which is getting a little manky.
Shock horror. When I opened it up, all the crockery, knives and forks etc, were covered in a kind of gingery, grainy, bitty powder type gunk!
Had to wash the lot by hand! Anyway I put a container of vinegar into the dw. Oh yes also topped up the salt and removed and cleaned the filter which was all bitty too. I ran it through a wash with the vinegar and it looks clean again.
Any explanations?? I cant see how it would be the washing powder as it was working brilliantly. I was just following what someone (Cathy?:)) said on here to bung in the odd dw tablet if things were looking a little stained. Do you think it was that slightly manky non stick pan?

It might have been that one of the arms couldn't spin, mine does this if a knife sticks through the cutlery basket and stops the arm moving0

Mine did that once, and it turned out my dad didn't know it was on and had opened it.Murphy's No More Pies Club #209

Thanks for that AT, well I am going to put it on again later and hopefully the problem will be resolved. I will make sure the arms can move. Sorry to be annoyingly curious, but why would that happen if one of the arms was stuck?
Is it trapped limescale? If you dont know, no probsGrocery Challenge £139/240 until 31/01

I think that the bits of gritty stuff are tiny particles of food that get spattered in a nice even coat then baked on.0

Had you had mash? I find that potatoes are the worst for leaving bits on the plates etc. I always rinse any mash off before it goes in the DW or I know most of the items will have to be washed again.

Put about half a mug full of vinegar into a mug. If your machine has a quick pre wash or rinse cycle before doing the main wash let it do that or click past it.
Then sit the mug on the top tray in the dishwasher and let it go through the cycle.
You can also bung half a lemon in there if you've got oneHi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. When we used to have a dishwasher, sometimes the arms would clog up with limescale so I would take them off and fill with vinegar and leave it to soak.
Our DW died after 5 years. The element was the kind that is exposed and it began to rust through where it was supported on brackets, eventually it burnt through on the rusty parts.0
