£5 pack of Goji berries when you buy 70p newspaper

Options
What's the deal?

Buy a copy of the Daily Express on Saturday 5th January for 70p, and you'll get a voucher for a free pack of superfood Goji berries, worth £5.19.

How does it work?

There will be a coupon inside this Saturday's Daily Express, which can be redeemed in Holland and Barrett stores for a 150g packet of Goji berries. To find your nearest outlet, use its store locator: Holland and Barrett

What is a Goji berry?!

A berry that has been called a 'superfood' by parts of the healthfood industry, it is claimed they can help prevent heart disease, aid the immune system, and generally pump you full of nutrients. However, as with many things in the food industry, its benefits and drawbacks are disputed. Yet for MoneySavers only one thing is really important; this is a great bargain.

Oh, as for the taste, apparently they are like savoury cranberries!

I nearly bought some of these in the Julian Graves half price sale. According to their packaging you can add 20 berries to one Litre of boiling water and leave for a few minutes for a refreshing drink.

sorry, but if the benefits are disputed, whats the benefit:confused: , and so why is it a bargain:confused: if youre spending 70p on something you dont want?

my benefit is that they're delicious! haven't had these for a while but couldn't stop eating these before... and i'm not the kind who buys healthy stuff just for the sake of it (although i tend to like it). and even though their benefit may not be as miraculous as claimed, they sure are more beneficial than most snacks you can buy at the newsagent for 70p. ;)

    although i don't remember paying over £5 for a bag of 150g!!

I remember these as a kid ! My mum puts them in our soup and I fished them out with my chopsticks. :D

Check your local Chinese supermarket if you have one, they are much cheaper there then Holland and Barrett !

  • Goji berries are apparently part of the wolfberry family with similar flavour and function. About as useful as dangleberries tbh.

Organochlorine pesticides are conventionally used in commercial wolfberry cultivation to mitigate destruction of the delicate berries by insects. Since the early 21st century, high levels of pyrethroid insecticide residues (including fenvalerate and cypermethrin) and fungicide residues (such as triadimenol), have been detected by the United States Food and Drug Administration in some imported wolfberries and wolfberry products of Chinese origin, leading to the seizure of these products.[22] Due to the demand for organic products in the West, some Chinese growers are beginning to experiment with integrated pest management and to explore the possibility of obtaining organic certification, something that has not yet been publicly disclosed for Chinese wolfberry farms and products.
Some Western resellers may state that their wolfberries are organically grown when in fact they are not. The Green Certificate claimed by some wolfberry marketers to be the equivalent of the United States Department of Agriculture's "USDA Organic" seal[23] is in actuality simply an agricultural training program for China's rural poor.[24] China's Green Food Standard,[25] administered by the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture's China Green Food Development Center, does permit some amount of pesticide and herbicide use.[26][27][28]
Despite some claims that wolfberries sold in Europe, the United States, and Canada meet organic standardsI]citation needed[/I, there is no public evidence for standardized organic certification of wolfberries from the Asian regions where they are commercially grown. Often, these berries are marketed as Tibetan or Himalayan Goji Berries that have been "wild crafted" or "wild harvested". On the contrary, however, Tibet's agriculture conventionally uses fertilizers and pesticides, and neither wolfberries ("goji") of Tibetan or Himalayan origin sold outside Tibet nor organic certification of such berries have been proved

Got goji berreis in Holland and Barratt a while ago at 70% off and they are awful!! Even is you soak them for hours they still taste like hard chewy eerrggh - nothing at all like dried cranberries (which I think are lovely)

But if you do want to try them them this is a good deal!!!
  • I am living proof that Goji Berries work!

I started eating them about a year ago when I gave up sweets and have stuck to it religiously since then.

I was told at the age of 5 that my eyes were never going to heal, there was nothing they could do to improve them and I'd eventually go blind in at least one eye before I turned 60.

The ONLY THING I changed about my diet was cutting out sweets and introducing sugar and when I went for my eye check-up she was 'amazed' because my eyes had started to heal!

My eyes had been getting steadily worse (sometimes very quickly) and I hadn't been wearing my glasses.

The actual change in my eyesight was beyond what she could have expected and my glasses strength was reduced to accommodate for it. =)

    So there we go... =)

    I'll be buying a paper!!!!!!!!!! I've never paid £5.19 for a 150g bag though?! I usually pay £3 for 250g. =)
