Using coupons at the Supermarket

I shop at ASDA every week and use mainly coupons I've printed off myself (found courtesy of this site :j ) each week also.
This week they totalled approx £4. But how much do you think is acceptable to hand over?
I've read somewhere that they're not supposed to take more than 10% of the total bill (although most cashiers will probably just punch them in regardless!) and seeiing as how I spend roughly £45 each week, thought I'd go for about the £4 mark.
What about you guys?

I used £9.80's worth on a shop of £84 the other day at asda - picked a young girl who was so busy chatting she didn't seem to care.
Most of mine have come from signging up for free samples on the freebie boards, have made some genuine complaints or praised items and they nearly always send you a letter and voucher....signed up for the pampers and huggies sites too - I know my DD's are both over the nappy wearing age but as a childminder the freebies they give out sometimes are handy - their vouchers are good too."Start every day off with a smile and get it over with" - W. I usually give a bundle of vouchers with my card and say casually 'can you take some of those'. Often the cashier will take the whole lot look at them and if they scan put them through.
My record is £21 vouchers on a £81 shop !!!!!0 -
So can you use any vouchers at asda - even if not buying the products stated on the voucher??
I get loads from pampers but never use them....sure they are lying around here somewhere (i never throw any out until they are out of date)0 -

The place to get all the best info on this is the vouchers board. It's always up to date and if you're armed with info from there you can argue the point with any cashier that doesn't know their own stores rules. My best advice is to try to pay at checkouts where the assistant looks like they won't care- young male student types I have a lot of luck with, and they will just scan the vouchers without looking at them. Older checkout assistants (I find) often start reading all the small print and buzz for their supervisor if not sure thereby risking a scene. But like others have said the policy varies from store to store and even from cashier to cashier in the same store so it's down to luck whether they take them.
