Washing up water

Can you put washing up water on plants? It feels a bit of a waste throwing it away when I've got some very thirsty potato plants right outside my kitchen window. I thought there might even be some nice nutrients in there from all the stuff I've washed off my plates.

Or would the detergent kill them?

I believe you can. I've seen it recommended and you can get water butts that as well as collecting rainwater, divert bathwater into them for garden use. If you use a detergent like Ecover for washing dishes, then you're not even going to be putting such harsh chemicals in the soil. perhaps better for plants you'll be eating.

You have reminded me of a thread I was going to start...

I think it would depend how heavy handed you are with the washing up liquid. A small amount occasionally does no harm but a lot, day after day is a definate no-no (especially in a pot or grow bag). Having said that you could just throw it on a different part of the garden each day, so there isn't a build up. I use a small amount of Fairy in warm water in a spray bottle to attack aphids and I think it's much better/effective than chemicals!

Yep. As long as, as has been said, you're not too heavy handed with the washing up liquid and spread it around. Bathwater too - I use my dustpan as a scoop to fill up my bucket.

One thing that lots of people miss is the water you scrub or peel your potatoes in... peel for the compost - water for the garden.

If you put a pail in the shower with you, it'll fill up and you can use that one your potatoes. The little bit of shampoo that falls in won't kill your little darlings either.

I just put the plug in the bath when I shower (Mine's not a separate shower stall) - it saves tripping up over a bucket :)

Currently using our dirty washing up water to keep the green & black fly at bay on the honeysuckle, seen no ill effects so far & have been doing it since June. Minimal nasty chemicals, definate reduction in aphids & that bed gets watered into the bargain:D
