  • I'm afraid that you have to by rough with them, asking them to go politely won't work, either kill them (squash them by hand or foot) or put them and a bit of the leaf that they are sitting on on the compost heap out of harms way....you will need to check every day now, under the leaves in particular

I know that spraying a mild solution of washing up liquid does no harm to plants and deals with greenfly so if you've got a spray bottle you can use (even temporarily empty a full one and rinse well) and give them a going over with that - even if it doesn't kill the pests it might put them off...

Pick off the bits of leaves with the caterpillars on and give it to your chickens (assuming you have some :)) They'll love you for it!

That's a good idea to give them to the chickens but there are just so many of them and they are really really tiny. That will take me all night but i will try it.

    thanks sarah1

    Squish 'em!
    (Yukk!!)
Alternatively liquid derris can be bought from a garden centre, it is organic & safe to use - at least for everyone but the bugs!
  • Or if you're really Old Style, Harry Dodson of Victorian Kitchen Garden fame recommends a blunderbus discharged across the top of the cabbages - apparently it makes all the caterpillars fall off (probably perforates every leaf too - but he didn't mention that bit)

Speaking of roses, any tips on getting rid of black spots on leaves.

It's a lovely old bush, apart from the spots.
I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.

Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.
