Tomatoes

Sorry if this is repeating another thread.
I have three tomatoe plants in the kitchen now nearly four feet tall. Problem is, there's no tomatoes growing yet. I now have some small yellow flowers here and there and they have become very thirsty in the last week, but still no tomatoes. Have I missed something?
Regards

When you get flowers you should feed them once a week with tomato feed, have a look in garden centres, B & Q, local habidashery (good spelling :rotfl: , not even sure if it's the right word?, one of them shops that sells everything
)Mine haven't even got flowers on yet, I think it's about when the seeds were planted I first planted mine in mid/end April and planted out cup final Saturday.
When life hands you a lemon, make sure you ask for tequilla and salt0 -
Ours are late this year - we think it's because the weather has been so cold and overcast up to this week.
We now have two tiny marble-sized toms, and quite a few flowers, so all is not lost! Another week or so and I reckon they'll have got the hang of it.
I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe

If you wander up to our "Collections" sticky at the top of the board you'll find an "Organic Foods" collection which includes threads on growing your own veg. There's mention of tomatoes in those. by your spelling I thinkg you meant haberdashery - but that's for sewing stuff.....but I guess you could always make some tomatoes and sew them on to the plant
the other type of shop you mean - I can picture our local ones, the type of shop....no idea!!!!
Thanks Galtizz - you make me smile!!!! :T0 -
Hi Bigman, when I used to grow Tomatoes I used to use a small paint brush to gently brush the tops of the flowers to pollinate them,(as the Bee does).I didnt start to feed them until the first truss of flowers had set.also I Would pinch out the side shoots that grow between the leaf and main stem so that the plant wasnt wasting energy producing unnessessary leafs.Happy Gardening.

Thanks everyone. I picked up some tomato feed in Tesco's a few weeks ago and I've started using it. Other than that I think I just need to wait a bit longer.

Hardware? is that the word? or perhaps ironmongers?0 -

As Aries said, do make sure that you pick off any side shoots growing between the base of the leaves & the main stem. Also, try removing some of the lower leaves. It may be that you have so many leaves that the plant is putting all its energy into growing them, & not leaving enough to go into making fruit. My dh removes as many leaves as he can without totally denuding the plant, so that the plant has nothing better to do than make tomatoes instead. We are usually inundated with tomatoes!
Aries' idea of pollinating the plants is worth trying, too, as you probably don't have too many bees & other insects buzzing round your kitchen doing the job for you (at least I hope you dont ;-)0 -

I call it a Chandlers as thats what my mum/nanna always called it. Then again there is a chain of "bit shops" called Chandlers so I don't know if it's just a shop brand thats stuck to all shops that are like thatCreeping back in for accountability after falling off the wagon in 2016.Need to get back to old style in modern ways, watching the pennies and getting stuff done!0 -
Tomatoes are mostly self fertile (I think it is called a perfect flower) so you can ensure pollination by giving the main stem a couple of firm taps each day, shaking all the flowers.
Do I take it you don't have anywhere outdoors to move the toms to? Depending on variety they may get a whole lot bigger yet!0
