Bio fuel

Hi, I don't know if any of you have heard of bio fuel, basically if you have a diesel vehicle you can add cooking oil to the diesel in your engine which saves you a lot of money as well as being good to the environment as you need less diesel, i think you have to find out the quantity of cooking oil you use per gallon of diesel, i think to start with you use 90% diesel to 10% cooking oil then increase the amount of cooking oil each time to see what percentage your vehicle can take, a friend of my dad's swears by it, there are also garages where you can fill up, its worth having a look on the web as there is a lot of info about it if your interested, its also meant to be really good for your engine

Be careful, be very careful .............Grant me the serenity to accept the people I cannot change, the courage to change the one I can and the wisdom to know it's me"0 -
Indeed be very careful! The newer the car the more caution you should take!
You need to a lot more research before trying this.
My £100 K-reg Astra works fine but I would'nt try it on a new TDI engine, with all the computer management in modern cars now.
But I agree there is a lot of info on the net and with the change in law which happened this June, that you can now use 2500lts a year with now fuel duty it is a very good money saving idea!0 -
vegetable oil and bio-diesel are not the same, dont get confused, there are many agents in veggie oil that are refined out when making it into bio-fuels, dont try it without a good fact finding exercise first0

As another poster said, cooking oil is not bio-diesel
Never do this without checking it's ok for your vehicle first, even in old vehicles it does depend on the fuel pump used etc.
There is a chemical process that waste veg oil goes through to turn it to diesel, this makes it kinder to your engine.
SVO (straight veg oil) does not work with injection diesels.
It can and will damage your engine.
There are courses around that show how to convert veg oil to diesel. The "Bloodlust" Clique - Morally equal to all. Member 10

I am running on 100% Vegtable oil, It is cheaper than diesel at 63P a litre. My VW Turbo Passat runs smoothly on it and it is legal if you dont use more than 2500 litres a year. I have copied and pasted the following:
You are here: Revenue & Customs Briefs > Excise Duty
Revenue & Customs Brief 43/07
Follow up to Revenue & Customs Brief 37/07 on Biofuels Simplification
issued on 19 April 2007 confirmed that the following changes applying to biofuel producers were to be introduced:- A production threshold of 2,500 litres per annum below which producers will not need to enter premises, submit returns or pay duty, and
- A reduction in the frequency of returns for all but the largest producers (defined as those producing over 450,000 litres per annum) from monthly to quarterly.
The only problem that I see is in winter, The Veg oil will thicken up in cold weather but farmers use an additive which is a special antifreeze for diesel fuel, Failing that lash out some money and buy diesel in the winter.0 -
If you are mixing oils with diesel, you should also be wary of what exactly is in your diesel mix in the first place. For example, the UK has pledged that a certain amount of fuel use will be bio diesel. How will it achieve the targets? By simply having all diesel fuel mixed with 5% bio diesel before it reaches the pump. So then your 10% mix then turns to 15% mix and could have some rather unfortunate consequences.matched betting: £879.63

That is really interesting - do you just buy cooking oil from the supermarket? Do you have to treat it in any way?
The ruling which you quote seems to apply to production - does that mean that as you aren't producing it but merely using it you can use as much as you want?0 -
If you buy SVO (some, not all diesels will run on SVO), I believe the tax still applies.
But don't just put veg oil in your diesel car without checking out all the pros and cons, e.g. those who use it recommed replacing the fuel pump with a Bosch fuel pump, some use special warmers to warm the tank before use etc.The "Bloodlust" Clique - Morally equal to all. Member 10

Just to add my piece.
Modern car has no prob ecu, ect ect. Well mine anyway.
Audi 2002 A2 84000 miles 60:40 svo tesco:diesel from new adn tax is only £35 for 12 months! Getting 55mpg around town. Now this is a cheep car to run.
No problems, in winter but its more like 40:60
But as people have said be carefull not all diesel engines will be ok, Bosch pumps and injectors are needed i believe.0 -
most cars should run fine on 10 to 20% veg oils but as mentioned the newer ones will need a conversion kit.
the law has recently changed to say you dont need to register to run your car on veg oil as long as you process it
you could by a heater that filters the waste oil for you - or add an additive to make it more runny
further info is listed

do some research as some cars cant take it if you use a higher mix
Gnever take advice from broke or unsuccessful people
